acceleration into an "SDI 2.0"-style arms race

And would you look at that, the Russians just tested a space-based anti-satellite interceptor

From the article you posted.

“We’ve made a lot of progress in hypersonics,” said Mark Lewis, director of defense research and engineering for modernization. “We love them all the same, but our No. 1 priority, frankly, right now is microelectronics.”

also turning the entire skin of an aircraft into sensors

Thought that had been done....Sensorcraft capability or they advancing the tech in materials?

im having a hard time explaining what i mean.

imagine an aircraft that has no single sensor or antenna or optics because it is all in the skin, made with micro or nano sized components.

The key to the SensorCraft lies in its skin. Instead of being an aircraft equipped with advanced sensors, the vehicle would be an aircraft built out of advanced sensors. John Perdzock, SensorCraft lead in the Air Vehicles Directorate of the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, explains that the program’s radar research largely has focused on breakthroughs in two areas: low-band and high-band antennas. An original aircraft design featured a joint wing configuration that resembled two letter “Vs” attached at the ends. This approach was favored for placing radar antennas on the outside of the aircraft so that the radar could scan completely around the aircraft’s exterior.

Now where have I heard that name before

Its the materials and structures used for the infill thats the key.Mix a carbon with a ceramic and use it in a Black Diamond CNC printer with a thinner wall and an internal "infill" of say 50% of a hexagonal or gyroid pattern.Fill the rest with saaaay helium to alleviate weight..Or maybe try diamond dust suspended in a filament or resin.

imagine doing that 3d printing in space where gravity wouldn't matter(as far as weight and moving the assembly around would be allot easier in space.)

but yeah you knew what I was talking about, I was unaware that there were active projects going on in the public right now.

maybe we will get a look at the 117's shadow or at least part of its lineage

there was something called the eye of gorgon that was this giga-pixle camera mounted on a drone

Chinese TBCC. Flew last year. Officially acknowledged as supersonic, not hypersonic. We all know that will change.

No visible. And its a model of what flew. Sensitive bits are going to be left out.

Perhaps. The Chinese don't seem to play the Russian game though. if they were, they'd call this hypersonic, not merely supersonic.

Time will tell.

Please forgive my ignorance on this topic - I observe these threads rather than post so would appreciate your guys perspective on mine:

I have noticed how much more media attention "Hypersonics" have gained in the last couple of years, much it seems has been touted about Hypersonic payload delivery platforms and similar platforms as future weapons. Even the ruskies have gone in on the act too...

The way the media has been portraying this is almost like its a "new thing". Yet I was of the understanding that Hypersonics is something that has been in development and potential deployment already, for a very very very long time.

I am being too conspiratorial here or what...

Whats your guys take on this?
