Baptists and Methodists have always been "hell-fire and brimstone," until relatively recently... So don't try to make this a Catholic issue; it's not.

I don't believe in hell but think this myth has been passed down since Ishtar's decent into the underworld.

Many cultures have this belief, much to my surprise and dismay, even buddhism

I believe in hell, the bible talks about it all over. It talks about how its a place where people will go. THE GATES TO HELL ARE WIDE AND OPEN. Jesus told us that there is a hell. Revelations talks about how a rock will hit earth and open hell.

I don't either,really... That is why this is sort of a moot topic to me. However, it has been so ingrained and stylized according to people's imaginations that if there is a such a place, I am willing to bet it's nothing like the modern day idea of it is. It's sort of like the whole image of the devil in people's imagination. He is the most beautiful angel God ever created, yet, people always paint these hideous imaginings of the devil.

Dbrandt, when I say the "church," I mean all denominations within Christianity. Most,as far as I am aware, were pretty "hell-fire and brimstone" until relatively recently. I'd say until about 30-40 years ago.

That's very interesting and I'd love to know where you're getting that information. If what you're saying is factually accurate, it could account for what's happened to Western Civilization in the past 40 years.

Well, I don't think it's so much due to the Church changing its whole "hell-fire" stance, as it is to just society playing victim. Everything is always someone elses fault in today's society. There is no personal accountability at all.

"Oh, I killed three people. Well, my mother locked me in the closet and fed me dog crap when I was a kid.Poor, poor me..."

I am confused. Who is this 'all forgiving God'? If Im understanding correctly, you are saying 'all forgiving' as in never gets mad, or enforces consiquences for actions? Am I understanding that correctly?

Well, I don't think it's so...

What I want to know is where you're getting your data from, though. Was that just personal experience, hearsay (meaning via media, friends, web, etc.), or actual research?

I was questioning this a couple of times in my life. God has anger he gets mad. He even punishes those for there mistakes. I think when it comes down too the matter tho. That when you get on you knees and pray realize you praying and in your heart realize what you did was wrong. That he will fogive you. The bible says something like "there is none that is good, none that follow me" What the acual scipure ment was that every does wrong, every commits sin, and every does not deserve God's forgiveness. But he gives it when the heart is true.

Ok, good, because that is my understanding as well. You said it perfectly. I think for a lot of people, punishment, is comming to terms with the things you have done. Understanding 100% with out justifications and rose colored glases the things they have done and how they effected others. Having their tough exteriors...walls... torn down so they are empathetic to the fullest degree. I still believe in hell. I believe in Satan, and I believe in demons. I do not however believe in either, the way that I was taught as a child.

You know that belief is pretty hard to shake, myself a born and raised Christian, still strugggle with it.

As a young child well into my adult years I was terrified of god and hell.

I still am terrified of both. I dont want to dissapoint God, and I really dont want to deal with satan or his demons.

Why do you think it is hard to shake? And, why would you want to?

We dont need to be terrified by hell. The bible teaches us to be afread of God. God and Jesus are the ones to decide if we go to hell. If we have a good heart and have works and faith and follow the two greates commandmtmentws of Christ we are good.

It seems like every few months this topic comes up again (and with a lot of the same posters) so I, too, will repeat myself.

THERE IS NO PLACE OF ETERNAL TORMENT!

Please see BTS thread number 233546 and BTS thread number 235826 for all the pertinent scripture verses, Greek translations, arguments, etc.

It is my sincere hope that the Christian community here on ATS can move past these "milk" issues into some real "meat".

Please forgive me if I seem to have less patience with the professed believers on this topic than with the atheists. We should all be reading our bibles and "study(ing) to show (y)ourselves approved." This topic of hell is a crucial (if somewhat elementary) issue to understand. Look up the verses I provided on the above threads; look up the original meanings of the words used. Be a commendable "Borean" and daily search the scriptures to see if these things are so.

I really liked this

Reminds me of an email I received regarding some UNI exam. You have to have heard of it?

Is there an adequate response to this post?

I find the whole idea of hell to be just a scare tactic and nothing more.
If God is so forgiving, why would anybody be sent to hell?
With so many "rules" to follow, surely everybody would break at least one in their lifetime. Would we all go to hell?
Or is there some kind of line that one must cross, otherwise you can safely go to heaven.

And yet the bible talks about it. Jesus talks about hell. Saying the gates too hell are wide and open. The bible talks about hell all over and talks about how you get there, and who is there. You make a claim and yet, it go against scripture.

So you think hell can not exist! wow thats a real laugh I feel sorry for you. Hell exists and disbelievers get sent back to earth for not believing in hell. hell is on earth btw, and it's called my apartment building in Van Nuys california.

Actually since hell only has occupancy for about ehhhh....50 people or so I take it you had to be really, reeeeealllly bad in your past life to get sent there. So you are probably safe from being sent there your self. Although there is this one guy down the hall who looks just like Hitler. and my apartment building manager has the same crazy look on his face as joseph stalin. seriously the resemblence is uncanny. Could they be living out their eternity sentanced to hell in my apartment building?

Also, what on earth( or Zeti Reticuli Prime) did I ever do in my past life to deserve being sent to hell?
