my entire point is that faith is bunk....

Once again, madness, you’ve taken a perfectly defendable position of yours and turned it, in one fell swoop, into an odd display of deep-seeded religious issues.

Every time you hit the gas on your car when the light turns green, you are operating on faith that someone will hit the brake because their light is red.

Every time you stand up in the morning you have faith that gravity will not send you through your ceiling.

Your position…if I may be so bold…is not that faith is bunk, but that “religious folk” are putting their faith in something that has not stood up to your keen empirical tests.

i hope that you're aware that you can't even support the historical existence of your central figure without faith...

Are you talking about my great grandfather?

Huh…I guess you’re right. But hey, I have to have faith that my dad came from somewhere.

i wouldn't say that's SCIENTIFIC unless you mean to use the word "god" as a poetic metaphor (like einstein or sagan did).

I’m assuming that either you don’t know what a Mandelbrot set is, or you’re simply disagreeing to be argumentative and stalemate the conversation.

You’re pretty damn smart…so I have a pretty good guess which is true.

well, you could look into evolutionary psychology for the answer. no need to look any further than the human psyche

Okay. If faith in a higher power were completely bunk and pointless it would have been weeded out of our psyche by evolution some time ago.

i'm curious as to how other people think

Sure. How could you call them ignorant otherwise?

i feel empathy towards the ignorant and wish to end their suffering in ignorance

No need. I’m sure evolution will weed us out sooner or later.

i'm drawn into thse discussion because i wish to emancipate people from the scourge that is religious faith

Exactly. Which is why I respectfully request that you NEVER ever claim to be discussing religion with an open, scientific mind again…ever ever.

yes, i'm using the word "faith" in a more specific manner

Are you talking about my great grandfather?

no, i'm talking about jesus

you probably do.

well, the merits of faith have no bearing on its truth. there are many positive benefits of believing in a higher power... but you can get those same benefits from other places.

Sure. How could you call them ignorant otherwise?

well, that and the fact that each person uses a different thought process when dealing with the exact same problem, i'm interested in understanding that difference.

No need. I’m sure evolution will weed us out sooner or later.

i'm more hopign for the gradual shift towards atheism that's occuring to just speed up

Exactly. Which is why I respectfully request that you NEVER ever claim to be discussing religion with an open, scientific mind again…ever ever.

yet i do. i even chime in on matters of faith from a purely theological standpoint. someone starts a thread on an issue of theology and i react with a theological answer. example: kl started a thread "your salvation inquire within" and i debated with him over the nature of salvation in christian theology. someone started a thread asking whether or not christians should follow the 10 commandments and other jewish law... i discussed it from a theological point of view.

now, i wish to emancipate people from religion... but i don't actively do it. the strategy i use is conciousness raising
