hey!

we deserve our media attention
we tend to not get as much drama as the rest of Europe.

I agree with you, when something unusual like this happens you guys and gals do deserve to have it go world wide.

What I notice is a lot of little quakes happening in areas that usually don't get anything. On IRIS if you look at the Ring of Fire you will see quite a few small quakes then the big one of 6.5 in the Aleutian Islands.

My little peon mind is interested in why all of a sudden small quakes are occuring where they usually don't.

Small earthquakes have been happening in these parts.
No idea why you think this is so special. a bit rare yep but if you look at seismic history it's not that unusual.

lol even holland was shaked a few years ago by a similar magnitude.

There are quite a lot of fault lines running through europe as a whole.

Eagle32
QUAKES IN THE UK
December 2006 - Dumfries and Galloway (magnitude 3.5)
September 2002 - Dudley, West Midlands (5.0)
October 2001 - Melton Mowbray (4.1)
September 2000 - Warwick (4.2)
April 1990 - Bishop's Castle, Shropshire (5.1)
July 1984 - Nefyn, north Wales (5.4)
June 1931 - in North Sea near Great Yarmouth (6.1)

PS. some of the biggest mother's had their epicenter here in europe, near sicily and one near lisbon.
the one near lisbon (1755) was huge and was felt in the america's and africa.
the one near sicily (1908) was one of the deadliest with over 100.000 dead, it was 7.5 and under water creating a massive tsunami.

The african plate is grinding itself into the eurasian plate. Especially around the south (spain, italy, greece) it's a volatile situation with earthquakes happening often. Experts also believe we might be due for another one like the one in 1755 because of the pressures from the african plate building up all that time. Anyway the EU isn't taking earthquakes lightly.

ah well my point was, earthquakes aren't really rare in europe.

PPS. would anyone be interested in a list of earthquakes in europe? Making one, would post it if people are interested.

Now that I know eveyone is safe, you are of course, entirely welcome.

Had an earthquake at home (Rochdale lancs) when I was a student back on hols and I remember them (my friends ????) saying that was the only time my bed had shaken all year ...But that was soooooo long ago as to be barely remembered.

Great pics, great graph, sky news eh you'll be famous soon ....

Enjoy....
