NASA has revealed there is something odd circling our planet. The object is 60 feet long, and rotates once every minute or so and was first spotted by amateur astronomer Bill Yeung. Since then the object has been known as J002E3.

Some scientists say its the third stage of a space shuttle. Some scientits say its a ufo, because, indeeed they can NOT confirm what the object is.
What do you think it is?

It's a safe bet it's a small meteor.

meteors dont look like straight lines.

Why not? A meteor could be ejecta from a liquid mantle, it could be a fractured piece of a larger object, many reasons it could be long and thin.

because this object has a pattern to it that meteors do not have.
its like a squigly line.

ah in under the pic there is some stats and it has 2002 date, how old is this?

You've never seen a liquid solidify in free space have you.

It's estimated at 60 feet long, therefore this is an object close to observation point. This is most likely NOT a meteor or comet body. Most logically it is a piece of space debris but more study hopefully will come forward.

Mystery Solved?

It is the lost (jettisoned) S-IVB third stage from the Saturn V rocket used to launch Apollo 12 in November 1969.

ali.opi.arizona.edu...
UA Astronomers Discover That Earth's Second Moon Wears Apollo Paint

en.wikipedia.org...

The only other explanation was that it was the S-IVB third stage for Apollo 12. NASA had originally planned to direct the S-IVB into a solar orbit, but an extra long burn of the ullage motors meant that venting the remaining propellant in the tank of the S-IVB did not give the rocket stage enough energy to escape the Earth-Moon system, and instead the stage ended up in a semi-stable orbit around the Earth after passing by the Moon in November 18, 1969. The Apollo 12 S-IVB eventually vanished.

BBC initially reported this to be a new MOON, then reported this follow-up thereafter...

BBC SOURCE: news.bbc.co.uk...

The latest analysis of the mysterious object called J002E3 suggests it could well be a leftover Saturn V rocket component from one of the Apollo lunar missions.

The suspicious, fast-moving object was discovered on 3 September by Bill Yeung from his observatory in Arizona, US. Initial orbit calculations indicated that it was only about twice as far away as the Moon, and in orbit around the Earth.

At first, astronomers were not sure whether the object was a passing chunk of rock that was captured by the Earth's gravity, or a piece of space junk.

Now the mystery may have been solved thanks to a retrospective analysis of its movement through space. The object is most likely from the Apollo 12 mission, launched on 14 November 1969.

Seriously.. 5 minutes research:

news.bbc.co.uk...

likely to be a leftover Saturn V rocket component from one of the Apollo lunar missions.

in September 2002.

Then on wiki:

en.wikipedia.org...

It is thought that J002E3 left Earth orbit in June, 2003, and that it may return to orbit the Earth in about 2032.

The object was also coated with something with the same spectral properties of white titanium oxide paint:

ali.opi.arizona.edu...

Binzel and Rivken took infrared spectra on the unique object, and those spectra "confirm that J002E3 is a dead ringer for white TiO paint," Hergenrother added.

Edit: doh, beaten to it twice!

Of course nothing definitive until one actually goes up and touches it, or takes a close-up shot of the "USA" markings on the side etc...

Oh well, it would be nice for it to be an unknown moon or alien stargate though!

For a thread like this one that is legitimate and has more or less been SOLVED (see above), what are the chances that ATS can implement a new policy of labeling solved threads SOLVED in the title.

This would be similar to the labeling of HOAX to a proven hoax thread which is done by the moderators.

Perhaps I will U2U Dulcimer or others. Or if a mod see this post please let me know. I think its a great idea to keep further posts from being sent and prolonging the thread, not knowing its solved.

Your right something is out there here are images from soho .One thing its a bit larger than 60 feet my friend.

images

Frome a day or two ago.
img227.imageshack.us...

This is from sunday.
img182.imageshack.us...

I have been looking at soho images for 3 yrs now almost.I have never seen anything like this.My partners also have never seen anything like this.
I also have over 500 saved images of objects in the soho camera that can not be explained. This object has been there for at least 4 days and its not moving much.

Unless you have experience with soho don't bother with stupid insults.I have e-mailed the soho office and am waiting for explanation which from time to time they give me when i send them images.
Now after watching for 3 yrs this is nothing like i have ever seen.
Notice the reflections it gives on first image.

I don't think this one has been on ATS before, I was just suggesting for any future or current threads that are solved for the mods to label them as such.

Good thread BTW, keep em coming!

That description does not fit with the way the shuttle works. Guess if you want to call the SRBs stage one and the fuel tank stage two, where is stage three? Now that's a coverup!

Orbiting the earth at twice the distance of the moon. Can we see
something only 60 feet long at that distance from earth? I don't
think an Apollo third stage rocket, or any part of the Space Shuttle
engine could end up that far away from Earth...could it?
