A Chinese submarine stalked a U.S. aircraft carrier battle group in the Pacific last month and surfaced within firing range of its torpedoes and missiles before being detected, The Washington Times has learned.
The surprise encounter highlights China's continuing efforts to prepare for a future conflict with the U.S., despite Pentagon efforts to try to boost relations with Beijing's communist-ruled military.
The submarine encounter with the USS Kitty Hawk and its accompanying warships also is an embarrassment to the commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, Adm. William J. Fallon, who is engaged in an ambitious military exchange program with China aimed at improving relations between the two nations' militaries.
Disclosure of the incident comes as Adm. Gary Roughead, commander of the U.S. Navy's Pacific Fleet, is making his first visit to China. The four-star admiral was scheduled to meet senior Chinese military leaders during the weeklong visit, which began over the weekend.

From NavyNewsstand, Kitty had recently left Japan in October for deployment.

USS KITTY HAWK, At Sea (NNS) -- USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) and its strike group departed Yokosuka, Japan, Oct. 17, for a fall deployment with embarked Carrier Air Wing 5 after completing a month of maintenance.

The strike group is expected to return to Yokosuka by the end of the year.

Other ships departing with the Kitty Hawk Tuesday included the guided-missile cruiser USS Cowpens (CG 63), and guided-missile destroyers USS John S. McCain (DDG 56), USS Fitzgerald (DDG 62) and USS Mustin (DDG 89).

Ok so we have Iranian UAV's taking footage of the US fleet in the Gulf, and Chinese subs sneaking up close enough, undetected, to fire on a carrier strike group. This just gets better by the minute. :shk:

Technology, it would appear, is catching up with us. But I suppose in a time of relative peace with China it is easy to get complacent and not expect these things to happen. This reminds me of the Israeli ship that was hit by the missiles from Hezbollah unexpectedly, and then claimed their radar was down. I am seriously starting to wonder just how good comparatively the US military really is against the latest Chinese developments. As the article states, we've cut back on watching them, yet they stepped up watching us. And let's not even get into the trade deficit.

Isn't it time to stop this nonsense and get serious with these people?

There's probably an attack sub hanging around as part of the group as well, I think the Chinese sub would be pretty easy to track by a carrier group.

More than probably. An attack sub (or two) always deploys when a Carrier Group goes out.

Odds are the Chinese sub was sitting in it's crosshairs.

Just a thought but perhaps the info was linked to make China think they got away with it when in fact they did not.

You know what they say a little disinfo here and there never hurt anyone

I dont think that the chinese will get away with it at all if they think they got away with it why is it on the news? As I was saying this is going to fly I mean first we get into a little trouble with iran and then we get into trouble with China and both countries end up having drone technology and it brings up this question. Why dont we shoot the drone down?

Is anyone else confused here or is it me?

The best offence against China is to make it's youth under the age of 35 love money, western appliances, and western culture.

'If you want to destroy an enemy, make him your friend.'

Ok, admittedly there is a lot of people to work on, but if you can capture the minds of the 100 million odd people in that particular age bracket whom are wealthier than those who live in the Mainland, then you've won 90% of the battle.

As for the sub, I am more than sure that it's progress has tracked.

China wants a war with the US in the future. They don't have the weaponry yet to engage the US the want they want to.

If the Communist party of china could have it's way with the US, they would want to conquer it the way it tries to conquer Taiwan.

Except in the future, they hope to have the weaponry to do so.

Of COURSE the sub was tracked.

The US knew all along where the sub was, and let it surface just thinking it was undetected. They even went to the trouble of having a patsy and putting it out in the press to make sure the US fleet commander looked bad. Just war games, that's all. Invite the drones, invite the subs- hell, invite Castro over for dinner. And of course when Castro secretly takes his anti-poison pill, the food will already contain the anti-anti-poison. Yep. Uh huh.

lol So, What did the USN Sea Wolf, Los Angelis Subs were doing sleeping?

A very Good excuse for getting more fund. the navy must be scared that the dem congress will cut their ASW gear funding.

What is the range of ship-borne sonars of US destroyers against a sub like this?

I'm sure they'd have better chance of detecting a sub if they drop sonobuoys all over. They don't do that a lot during peacetime, do they?

Excellent point.

It would be nice to know if the Navy really did know that sub was there though, I'm not entirely convinced that they did.

this thread has allready been disussed

but basically , the ocean is one very large noisy place and a diesel boat would have little trouble getting into torp range of a carrier - don`t forget that the US has little experience over the last 20 years against diesel boats- - they have nuke boats which are noisier by a

That, or someone within DoD leaked a sincere warning to politicians and the public. Especially when Chinese subs and US CVBGs play essential roles in the possible flash point that is Taiwan.

I believe one day there will be a war between China & US if american want to save Taiwan. BTW, I'm a native Chinese.
My country will fight for Taiwan even US force comes.

I'd to admit the fact, we are behind US in multiple areas. But how much will American pay for the war? 1m people killed? Or the west coast hit by nuke? Chinese traditional strategy is to play hide-and-seek, show when you can't, hide when you can, show your fear when you don't afraid, show your courage when you weak. Chinese nuke can delete the earth but the government hide them. And China will use everything to keep the union of the country. We will protect our country because this is our country, Taiwan is a part of it since thousands of years ago. But what Taiwan means to US?

West Coast nuked? You must be joking, are YOU prepared to loose your ENTIRE country because of Taiwan? I feel the urge to tell you that the nuclear option is heavily in our favor.

agree
that the sub sighting causes no need for alarm at this point

as it stands the US fleet is only thing stopping CHINA from reacquiring TAIWAN now

assuming that CHINA is still dead set on the issue
then in due time i don't know
25 or "?" however many years from now that advantage could change

looking at it from CHINA's strategic stand point
yes it is worth the risk
actually it makes prefect sense really to that regard

CHINA's made no secret about it's wanting to become a quote "true super power"

how can it, if in fact it's still inclosed in it's own backyard

acquiring TAIWAN would increase CHINA's influence in the regoin(make it a bigger player on a worldly scale)
not just militarily but economicaly

TAIWAN would supply CHINA to important(key) vital shipping lanes into to the PACIFIC as well (a so called stepping stone effect)

if war ever did break out between CHINA and the US and assuming CHINA addressed it's lack luster naval capability

it would be fought on conventional terms
meaning one would try not to push the other side too hard
where it would get out of control(in short terms another KOREA)

the stakes are just too high at this point to commit to a nuclear exchange
both would go out of their way just to avoid one
no matter who seem to have an advantage on paper

like one of the chinese general has mentioned before, china will go nuclear if that's what takes.

China will not let Taiwan go unless the entire country is destroyed, in that case, the US will go down with China.

This is basically the idea many chinese top generals have in mind.

Their assumption is that the US will not risk the chance of the destruction of human society inorder to seperate Taiwan from China. And that's pretty much the reality.

and that's why Taiwan today is still offically part of china; their offical name is still "Repulic of China",
and according to the US, Taiwan is not a country by itself, it a part of China that is governed by a seperate government different to the PRC's government.

If PRC didn't have that attitude, Taiwan would already be a seperated country by now, with the help of the US.

UH OH. Somebody was caught drinking the commie juice! First off. I beleive your nuculear facilitys would be destroyed before you could get the first shot off. Would china be willing to commit suicide all for a little country? As far as america not backing taiwan, who is sailing weapons systems to taiwan? Who has a pact to protect taiwan in case of an attack by china? That mean Ole US of A.

Ahhh the last line of defense for the defenselss.. Chinese generals talking about nuking the US mainland if we do intervene in such an attack on taiwan.
Well the world population will be a billion ppl smaller.
