Underground Base - Dawsonville GA

This is all very interesting. I will need to take a trip out here soon. I have a question...what is the structure in the center of this image:

hi, i go to dawson forest all the time and my husband and i are very interested in it. i was wondering if you might have any maps that could show me where everything there used to be located. i have explored on foot with arial view maps, and found a few pretty neat things. if you have a map or any kind of cool info please email me! been there...look for reports reference sattelite flyovers that maintain status of a short list of radiological HOT spots across the nation...Dawson forest is one of them. I put a camera on a pole and remotely took pictures of a control room like area through a vent shaft I think. Lots of office and electrical (infrastructure, not equipment) stuff concreted in. This is about half way between the big horse riding AO and the bridge to nowhere you talked about

The base that you're referring to did in fact exist it went be the name of Lockheed. My Grandfather was a nuclear reactor operator there. He died long befor I was born. The place is shrouded in secrecy I really don't know much more about it.

i have lived here all of my life I remember when i was small seeing the jeeps coming by our house hauling barrels of stuff in and out of the area we lived near the entrance at the other end of the wildlife area off of 53 west. my exhusband said when his father was alive they would come by carring stuff and some of it spilled in the road they would walk out there to see what it was it looked liked some kind of powder. strange I have two brothers that were born during this time both retarded my exhusbands dad died from lukemiahe did not smoke. and his little brother is about the same age as mine is retarded and now my ex has lukemia. i also know of others that lived near by had children who are retarded or has some genetic disorder I wish ther was some way to check further into this but I don't know where to start

I live in Dawsonville.
I have lived here most of my life.
I have always heard stories of the Lockheed Radiation base.
Most of what I am about to tell you is true.
A long time ago this man had about 10,00 acres of land in Dawson Forest, one day government vehicles and a man named Lockheed Martin comes and asks the man to sell the land for this military base that they want to build for experiments and top secret government stuff. The man agrees and sells them the land. Lockheed was above and under the ground. While still running the base they did a lot of experiments on animals, trees, pretty much anything. Thats why you might see no trees around the base. That's how it was when the base was still running. Now the trees have probably regrown. The files are still in the base. When the base was shut down it was not flooded. Filled with dirt maybe but not with water. There is nuclear waste all over Dawson Forest. Some people clam to see deformed animals walking around in Dawson Forest. Some people clam that they're water is contaminated with radiation poisoning. One evidence that is true is that a new Middle School that they built about 3 or 4 years ago called, River View Middle School in Dawson Forest, is sitting on Nuclear waste. It's been proven. But the officials say that it is harmless to people. That the waste is so far down that it won't do anything. Also, in the base. One of my classmates has been up to Lockheed recently. There is a tunnel that has been dug that the teenagers has made and my classmate has gone under the wall and into the base. He saw where the opening was but did not go in. He was that frightened that he might find something that he didn't want to find. A couple of people has said this same thing. But, I am uncertain that it is true.

Thanks to everyone for the great info, to all trekkers and adventurers take care, I just wanted to say that I personally appreciate and value the effort lots of you have made to get this info and pictures out, only by taking things into our own hands can we know more of the secret man made places of this earth.

Hey man im aj dude i live in cumming and have been back there numorouse time and the past few have traveled oon foot around the basses and man is it awesome i have also been to the bridgde i have drivin to both sides of this bridge and at the end of the pavement is a nuclear reactor and this is said to be miles away from the actuall bases man and the whole base thing all started back in the 30's this farmer was buying the land approximetly 10,000 acres of land and was sold to atlanta and then bought buy the gnal and was made a base to try and develope nuclear warcraft. and they didnt succeed on developing it so they eventually shut it down and my guess is there was still radioactivity so they flooded it b/c radioactivity cannot radiate through water. but yea man it is really cool and i am goin to look for that light.

The biggest problem here is most of you dont want to know the truth because the fiction and partial facts you folks produce here is more interesting than the boring facts. It is what it is folks. There are numerous sources of factual data about the history of Dawson Forest available if you really want to know. The govt agencies responsible for looking after the property does so because the City of Atlanta believes in wise land management and not because there are secrets to protect. The reason law enforcement and non-law enforcement personnel patrol the area, maintain the fences and keep entrances covered is because of safety and liability issues. If you are going to visit the place then stay out of the areas your not supposed to be.

As for the Nuclear Engine for airplane test site at Georgia.... Google Project MX-1589. The engines were developed at the Idaho National Lab.
The purpose of the Geogia site was to help determine protection of the plane crew and the development of a cockpit to protect the crew. I'm sure it was also used till 1971 to examine the effects for a Project Pluto.... nuclear contamination from a nuclear ramjet engine.

Nah man this base was actually used to create and test nuclear warcraft hints the hot cell building and the cool down building. if you first go into the park to the hot cell building is said to be were all the horse trailers park its the buildint that is fenced off. the whole reason for the base was not to make airplanes engines either like i said they were trying to create nuclear warfare.

After reading over the post here i decided to tell the story of my time escorted from dawson forest by military police and f.b.i.
In the early to mid 90's i lived just over the dawson/forsyth county lines off of hwy 9 and on one nice summer day i had gotten tired of riding my dirt bike in my backyard,So a friend and myself decided to travel down hwy 9 on our dirtbikes and make the quick left into dawson forest.

We had been there for about an hour traveling all of the forest(at this time there had been alot of dirt piles and downed logs which i thought were from old logging companies) We were off are bikes long when we discovered a large path it just did not seem like it was part of a old forest logging company rd.Then we noticed alot of what seemed to be a concrete door or door that had been concreted over which we thought was strange. We began to look around the remaining area we were in and found several signs from a construction company that was from the atlanta area and finally we found a large military sign that stated the area was off limits to unauthorized persons and this we had found even stranger because we had not known of any military base. as we continued to look around we had noticed a small entrance covered with overgrown weeds and other debris. After clearing some of the debris away we noticed that the small entrance was not so small it was the size of a loading dock door and it was concreted over as well but on the edge of the door you could see the tracks for where the door would slide up and down on. after several more minutes of prying off debris you could see a sign that statec highly radioactive this had peeked our intrest but just as we had gotten that far a military jeep rolled up with two mp's in it..

As the two mp's had gotten out of the jeep another vehichle had pulled up and this one had two F.B.I AGENTS after several minutes of listening to the F.B.I agents threaten us and tell us that we were trespassing on government property and that if they wanted to they could lock us up (and the whole time there yelling at us the mp's have there riffles trained on us) after giving them are names and addresses along with telephone numbers we were told that if we were ever caught in the area again we would be arrested and locked up. We were aloud to push our dirtbikes to the main dawson forest rd where we were then escorted out of the forest with the f.b.i in the car in front of us and the mp's in there jeep behind us.

After returning to my house and talking to my dad and explained everything to him. he had said that he had heard the stories while at the main dinner in dawsonville he said that he had dismissed al of it as just small town gossip til i had told him what happened to me. all i know is that day i was never so scared as i was .. i no longer live in dawson county but my father and stepmother still do and when i return i still ride in the forest but not in the area where i was caught by the mp's and the F.B.I i have come close but just have not been able to cross over a certain section of the forest for fear of being arrested

somebody told me...there's actually paperwork stating that the military released this to see what it would do to people...and my clovers grow up to 7 leaves instead of 3...weird....i do live in dawsonville, close to dawson forest..

My Grandfather worked at the base for years. The government imployed him after WWII. From what he told me there was radiation testing going on on a somewhat large scale besides that i dont know that much more about the site.

No you are not crazy, the base does exists and was used to make a nuclear aircraft durning WWII, The US Air Force contracted Lockheed Aircraft Corporation to build it. The City of Atlanta currently owns the 10,000-acre tract of land and is called Dawson Forest Wildlife Management Area (DFWMA) who now manage the area. Keep looking you will find info on this subject
