I added some contrast and edge enhancement here:
sorry about the quality but had to compress due to upload limits
could be a flying insect of some sort, blurred due to the speed, but the wing shape and body does not look like any insect ive ever seen
also from the contrast enhancement i cannot see a tail of any kind so i dont think it's a kite of any kind.
for some reason the whole photo has a sort of geniuine feel about it, from what i can tell it dosnt look photoshopped in any way.

I took this photo and I have had all kinds of suggestions of what this might be but smoke is about the most stupid yet.
Must be a reasonable explanation for it but I think it has more chance of it been superman than smoke

I don't think its ET nor either the esoteric Black Manta.
Lets just call it a unidentified flying smoke object or UFSO.
I created another illustration, critic's are welcome.

I don't see how you can say these two "UFO's" don't look similiar, this is the UFO,
To me it looks like the Pegasus going across the picture at an angle in a picture that wasn't taken too well.

Sainty do you have the 8 megapixel version? That would provide much more detail.

Ok.
This is hard for me to say, but i am going to say it any way.
I spent a couple of hours with the origional image (Thank you sainty999) but I have a problem with it.
In my opinion, and only my opinion, its a well made image, but its just that, made.
heres what I did. (so any one with photoshop can do the same...
1) shift + Ctrl + b. auto coloured the image. (Anomalies appear first here)
2) adjust RGB to take out the red and green.....
3) Ctrl + M for curves. Made the image darker by about 15 %, and then you will see the problem I have with this image.
look in the bottom left of the image, and once you see it, darken the image a bit more and you will notice the same happening across the whole image.
There is a lattice running through out the image - Just like a lattice if i took a photo, viewed it on my TFT screen, and then took a photo of the monitor.
Sorry, but I looked at nearly 50 photos of my own to see if this was a camera artifact or some thing, but i cannot get it to happen, unless i take a picture of a picture on my monitor.
What gave it away? Hard to say really, apart from the dirt across the image - try the above and you will see for yourself.

Did I read it wrong? You said, I thought, that you only noticed the spot on the camera's LCD after you'd shot it, so I don't see how you can now claim it was 2-3 miles away.
The Tynemouth area is not well known for secret testing of clandestine US aircraft, but is quite popular with kiters (kitists?), with a huge kite festival in August up at Whitley Bay, and is apparently becoming known as a good area for kite-surfing and kite-boarding (the British National Surfing Championships are going to be held there this month, I believe). In fact, Tynemouth was the site of early development of the Flexifoil kite design .
If anything artificial was flying over the beaches that day, it's most likely it was a kite.
But then, I can see how someone could think it might be a UFO
