I tried the foo fighter angle as well.

Yeah I figure that Soviets must make searching easier but I keep getting the same threads despite my combination of search terms.

It is definetly something from the 40's though.

thought I was onto something here.
Top Secret IPU Document*

In march 5, 1942, George C. Marshall writes a top-secret memo to the President, which states: "regarding the air raid over Los Angeles it was learned by Army G2 that Rear Admiral Anderson... recovered an unidentified airplane off the coast of California... with no bearing on conventional explanation... This Headquarters has come to the determination that the mystery airplanes are in fact not earthly and according to secret intelligence sources they are in all probability of interplanetary origin." Marshall goes on to state: "As a consequence I have issued orders to Army G2 that a special intelligence unit be created to further investigate the phenomenon and report any significant connection between recent incidents and those collected by the director the office of Coordinator of Information." The memo bears correct Office of Chief of Staff (OCS) file numbers and has "Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit" (IPU) typed on it at a later time by a different typewriter. It is logical to believe that this is the order that sets up the IPU.

I'm thinking that the Cold War began with the partion of Germany specifically, or the partition of Europe generally. Perhaps a UFO incident in West Germany...?

I'll be in chat in an hour or so. But I have run out of ideas.

I think I'm about 95% sure where the answer lies.

clue, one more time

"cold war beginning, no Project, no Soviets, but Little"

Begining of cold war is roughly between 1945-1947

No Projects...Project Sign wasn't implemented until Sept. 1947 or about the same time as MJ-12. So, the event had to occur before this time period.

No soviets - means that it did not involve russians or russian sightings.

"but Little"....the real kick in the arse. And HUNT said that the incident was pretty well known in UFO circles and has been a topic of discussion here at ATS.

So, I looked up the members of MJ-12. Who was one of the most prominent members.....General James H. DooLITTLE......

He is remember for investigating a UFO crash in Sweeden/Norway in 1946. Supposely this investigation, along with Roswell led to the formation of MJ-12.

Google Spitzbergen, Doolittle

Again, I'm pretty sure this is it. Hope I get "applause" points if I'm heading in the right direction.
