The Constitution represents only a set of general principles out of which implementing statutes and codes have emerged. The success of the document in remaining the foundation of American government is based on the fact that successive Congresses and Courts have been able to interpret it or readapt it to the demands of changing times.

Article X states that the national (federal) government has only those powers that are delegated to it explicitly -- enumerated -- in the Constitution. All other government powers fall by default to the states -- residual powers -- with the limitation that nothing prescribed by state law can nullify any of the powers granted in the Constitution. Despite the fact that residual powers remained with the states, the "elastic clause" of the Constitution (Article I, section 8) states that Congress shall have the authority to "make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution" the powers given to the federal government by the Constitution.

Fry2,

you have some valid points here.

crime is rapidly increasing in Britain which was once a civil country.

problem is that with globalism it is no longer possible to be an 'island' and do what you want.

furthermore the decline in morality in Britain has been more rapid, that in the end will ensure more crime as I see it.

lest you think that I am slamming Britain I am not for I see the same thing happening in Canada as I write this.

I think this may be the quote JB was alluding to :

God forbid we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. The people cannot be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented, in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions, it is lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. ... And what country can preserve its liberties, if it's rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to the facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time, with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.

Works for me...

Another good one:

A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be the constant companion of your walk.

I bet you wish you left that can of worms closed...

Well you forced me to find a reference to it if not a direct quote.

"Thomas Jefferson himself was wary of the power of the dead over the living in the form of an unchanging Constitution. To ensure that each generation have a say in the framework of the government, he proposed that the Constitution, and each one following it, expire after 19 or 20 years. James Madison, Jefferson's contemporary, found comfort in knowing that the populace would not be thrust into political turmoil every 20 years, and noted that the way the Constitution is now structured, it implies an acceptance of the status quo unless explicitly changed."

Fry,

Keep in mind that this article is written with heavy satire. Conservatives need to get a sense of humor....maybe that's why there's so few conservative comics.

I don't think the writers of this article seriously think that the NRA advocates ownership of fertilizer bombs.

What they were doing is showing the connection of the NRA to this extreme right-wing militia attitude. Like JB1 said, these guys take the constitution to be some sort of religious document. Guns are just props in some twisted ritual.

Aye guns made "us" a free country. Except for Indians (guns=their genocide), blacks, women, jews, and anyone else who wasn't a White Anglo-Saxon Protestant male. This wasn't a "free country" until the 20th century. Ooooo....America's just this sacred land, a shining beacon of equality. If you believe that YOU'RE SICK!

But really, enough. It's just....I can't understand it. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?! Why are you so bloody-minded and violent? Guns, blood, constitution, patriots, the flag, more blood, killing, freedom, bombing, blah, blah blah... it's enough to make you want to HURL!!

Eh whatever, go stockpile guns in the woods. I'm going to go play Final Fantasy XI. You know, something fun...not like reading the kooky garbage in this thread.

Ahem, John Bull...........

Thomas Jefferson also said we should revolt every 10 years to keep the govornment in line and from getting too powerful.

That said, the consitution and the basic articles have not been re written because NO ONE WANTS THEM TO BE RE WRITTEN. Obviously, people are quite happy with the way it has been, the bill of rights, the core of the coinstituion. No one sees any need to change these things, we are quite happy with them as a people.

But, we have added HOW MANY AMENDMENTS? The constution does change, When something comes up.....we write something new into it, and amendments can be written to repeal them. Just take prohibition and its repeal as an example.

Americans treat the constitution like religous writ because it is beautiful to us, it is something we hold dear, something we enjoy, something that is sacred to us. We do not flip flop every ten years to change it to suit whatever whim is choking the population at the moment........

And a good question brought up...how about that crime rate in Britain? Gun ownership is almost impossible there, with the draconian laws and high cost of them. Yet your crime rate, gun violence, continues to rise. Alot of good gun control is doing there, eh?

California and New York. Both have HEAVY gun control laws, as does washington DC. Yet the murder rates in all above areas continue to rise, crime continues to soar. Then I look at here, Washington state, where we have very open gun laws, conceal carry rights. The crime rate here involving guns continues to remain pretty low. And, before you state poverty or some other garbage as cause for high crime and violence, Washington state has the third highest unemployment rate in the nation, Maybe even the second now with more layoffs we have had. There is ALOT of poverty, but little gun control, and we have very little problem with it. So much for gun control keeping people safe. Incidentally, the murder rate this year in Seattle was a whopping 35 people. WOW. a city of 585,000.....and 35 murders..........which I beliebe the majority of those we non gun murders, but strangluations and knifings.

So much for gun control.

Gun ownership is as valid today as it was 227 years ago when it was written into the constitution. Ity is still an American right, a right we hold dear. This is NOT Europe. WE have NO desire to do ANYTHING like Europe. Having been to Europe, the oppresive controls on everything, the lack of breathing room, and the most disturbing govornment policies there....no thanks.

WE like America just the way it is. Thankfully, ultra freakish left wingers like Flinx are in the minority.

Incidentally, thats why the last election was so neck in neck between Bush and Gore. The Clinton admin and its gun control laws really alienated ALOT of people, and Gore even had to distance himself from the issue and develop friendlier ties with the gun owners of America. I know alot of people, not republicans, who did vote for Bush for that very reason: Gun laws.

This article is pretty much left wing lame humor. They love to blow alot of things out of proportion, look at bowling for Columbine. Such crap. These people really need to try living in the real world........

But Fry pretty kuch tore up that article.

And, of course, John, who the hell else would the NRA blacklist? Gun control groups, duh! No surprise there. Why shouldnt they? I look at that list of blacklist, and minus the gun control issue, the vast majority of the organizations I despise and distrust for other reasons.

If you have something to #ing say about me, #ing say it to me!

Ultra-freakish left-wingers?! There's people here talking about liberals being stalinists and in cahoots with the NWO and you have nothing better than to critize me for posting and article that I think makes sense? What kind of twisted thoughts are squirming throught that head of yours? You critizise Bush one moment, then in the next start spouting this ultra-patriotic, crazy babble.

Oh god, you people make me sick. You are starting to make me see things your way. Violently, hatefully. I better stop before I say something that gets me banned.... Maybe some time in Vana'diel will cool me down.

Take your sedatives and zone out too the playstation, Flinx.

This IS a site of controversy and debate. Get used to it.

I have been called everything from a Nzai to a commie to a devil worshiper. Ive been called clinton lover and bush lover. You dont see me blowing my grey matter over it. Chill out.

Yes, when you post a controversial topic, be prepared to take some heavy flak. Gun control is controversial, as heated a subject as abortion.

My views have been called worse than freakish, I let you off easy. Im an indepenadant, so yes, you will find me bashing the Bush lovers then turning around and ripping new assholes into clinton lovers. Conservatives and liberals to either extreme sicken me, they both are ruining things I hold dear, so niether are safe.

Right now, we are in a dangerous situation. We have a republican prez and a republican congres: there is no counter balance. During the clinton years, the only thing that prevented clinton from enacting his sick limp wristed commie sell out plans was a republican congress. Now we have a republican in ofice, we need a democrat congress to balance him out.

The point of this is to prevent them from doing harm. The more laws, regulations, and the like they attempt on the country, the more damage they do. Thus, I want an inefefctive pwoerless govornment overall that can do little more harm.

If we had a dem prez and dem congress, you can bet id be ranting and going for the throat of the commie tax and spend socialist utopian crackheads that they are. But for now, they aint there, and I have the christ insane ultra right wing fascist braindead inbred republiklansmen to battle.

So, my intent is to attack and belittle both parties and sides.

And this article is an example of paranoid unrealistic liberal rantings. No one is saying rocket launchers should be legal. Just small arms. Any idiot can see that. And liberals are trying to disarm us. So yes, Ill attack anyone who suports regulation and disarming of america.

Because in the end, the gun is all well have against liberal or conservative dominion.

to exist with out the gun. take guns away, we will use arows, take them away we will use swords, take them away, we will use knives, take them away we will use sticks, take them away we will use rocks.......boy, i could go on for days....
society is not ready to live without violence. I don't thinnk that humanity will ever see the day when the govt's control all the weaponry...at least i hope not... someday some of you will realize that the u.s. govt doesn't realy have YOUR best interests in mind...not to mention that half of the other govts in the world would love to take a crack at the u.s.
i will keep my guns just in case...just like why i lock my doors, wear a seat belt, work out, atempt to eat healthy (at somewhat..) ect, ect, ect.
it doesn't matter what the topic is..only the ones who truly have a stance on said topic will say anything....the rest of public could care less....unless it of course has something to do with $$$
most of the publis are like a bunch of lemmings...they just follow each other off the cliff or populate untill..one day all the predators get together for a huge feast
they can have my guns when i pry the last of thier cold dead hands off of thier pens

Chris Rock is an idiot. It would cost 5000 dollars to hunt a deer. Gun control is wrong. What we need is crime control. If everyone were allowed to have a concealed firearm, criminals might not be so quick to rob someone who most likely is packing a .38 snubnose in their pocket.
