Lobbyists or propagandists, call them what you want, are people who work diligently to express certain opinions and points of view. Sometimes
lobbyists or propagandists are individuals or organizations that want to make their views known in the hope of acheiving certain goals. On a local
scale, this would include the P.T.A. or, among other things, environmentalists, or people trying to make social issues known and laws introduced.
On a broader scale, there are, as we all know, lobbyists or propagandists that work for many of the same issues that smaller "grass root" groups
work for. But there are also people who are paid to work at making issues known and decisions made that work in the favor of certain governments,
groups and industries. You know the type; Greenpeace, P.E.T.A. and even for companies such as Boeing and G. M. We might not agree with the concept
but it happens and, alas, these "paid professionals" have become an accepted part of society.
On another level, however, I have to ask whether or not there are people who are being paid by certain groups, organizations and even governments to
work at making alternative ideas and beliefs known to the general public. The goal of the groups and their paid, professional propagandists is
to sway public opinion with well prepared and carefully worded arguments and disinformation.
It has often crossed my mind that such paid, professional, propagandists might use blogs and forums to reach large groups of people in an
effort to make their views known and to engage in debates. Keep in mind that a "debate" between a professional vs a "regular joe" is, for the
most part, no contest. A skilled debater can make mincemeat out of someone -- no matter how intelligent -- using phrases and prepared arguments and
clever statements designed to ridicule or put down someone and/or his beliefs. In doing so, people whose opinions are not established can often be
swayed to adopt the "winning" point of view.
Do you believe that such paid professional propagandists exist right here at ATS? Do you believe that there are certain individuals here at ATS who
are paid by groups, organizations or even governments to "work the forums and blogs"? Their goal, of course, would be to engage people in
"friendly debate" but, being trained professionals, one could hardly call their posts and involvement as being "fair".
I am not trying to begin a "witchhunt" but this is an idea that has crossed my mind and it is something that has bothered me. A forum dealing with
political issues would be a fertile field for such people to work within and, one has to acknowledge, that ATS is certainly a place where such
individuals might be assigned.
