I would like to have a discussion about why most straights hate gays, lesbians, bi's and all the rest.

I know that most people let the bible do the speaking for them which is fine. But what I would like to do is see what is said if we only go on with the assumption that God is love and all about love and that judgement is wrong. So I do not want people to use the bible like a whip, but to find out what each person feels about sexuality, if the bible did not say anything about it. I'm not wanting to offend anyones religious views, but I would like to see how people really feel and why with out using the bible as a weapon. And maybe everyone can come to a peaceful understanding of each other.

plz move this where it belongs

I have absolutely nothing against people who have a different sexual preference than myself. It's their choice, not mine, therefore it is not my place to judge.

On the otherhand, I find it so damn ignorant when I hear people slagging off homosexuals, etc, it really gets on my nerves.

Edit: By the way, this thread should be in BTS.

Thank you both for your posts, I just wish that most people were as enlighten as you two. I personally think that we need to love everyone here on earth and except everyone here and let God do the judging. I keeping thinking if we could all get along we could accomplish so much more. I made this thread because of all the gay bashing threads in ats. I'm a christian and was taught not to judge and to love and treat everyone as you would like to be. I just am wanting to see if people from all different areas and life styles still remeber how to love

it's very simple, those who "hate" have an insecurity problem.

I really think that most people do not hate gays, it's just the gay bashes make the news thats all. Like Gerbil Bush pushing it to the bible thumping right, it's all propaganda.

We need some one to hate, so the puppet master can continue to pull the strings.

Where is your statistics that say that most straight people hate gays? That sounds kindof..uh...sexist?...or..well..is there a word for one orientation to be stereotyping and hating another?....Heteroist?

I could just as easily ask "Why do most gays hate straightpeople?"

I dont think theres that many people that hate gays, especially not "most of the straight people."

Sounds like ignorance, looking for a flamefest. I wont participate.

"Hate" = "ignorance"

I was raised by a homophobe, I'll wager Dad would cop to that. I was homophobic too. That changed when I went to college and met gay people. No different than me, just gay. Changed the way I felt about gay folks. Except lesbians. Damn, I hate competition.

Most straight people hate gays? Back in the day maybe but we are maturing as a species.

Some of the nicest people on this earth are gay. I worked with lots of them, and i dont care what their lifestyle is. I cared about them as individuals. The men are the funniest- and i would rather be with them sometimes, than straight people.

You and I have been around ATS for a couple years, and we've seen each other around the boards for a while.. I've always considered you to be one of the very rational members of the community, and then I see this.

I see nothing unnatural about my 17 years with my husband.
There is nothing wierd going on in my home that could concern you.
If God made you, He also made made me, and I am just as favoured in His eyes.

How can my relationship with my husband have any impact on your life ?

It's not like we're doin' it in your rose bushes........

I don't think most people hate gays, especially now in this present day and age. If anything it is turning the opposite nowadays. Watch TV. A better question would be, why do a rather large majority of straight men feel awkward about gay men? And I would say, speaking as a gay man (although celibate), that straight men do not like to be eyed up in the same way "they" eye up woman. It makes them terribly uncomfortable. Another good question is why does it make them uncomfortable? And I would say because they are predisposed to heterosexuality, therefore homosexuality is alien to them, and we all fear the unknown.

It's fear, basically.

I hate a gay with the female acting. That's disgusting.

but if they acting like straight I can hang around with them, but try not to touch the body to make them feeling nice. lol

By the way , IMO, most straight hate gays because they fear that they could being a gay LOL.

People hate and fear things they don't understand. Or as intrepid said. Hate = Ignorance. As soon as people stop stereotyping and actually look into the matter they find that it's not what they thought it is. But most homophobes won't get informed. They don't have the balls to face their fears.

(BTW Why the sudden spike in threads about homosexuality. Something to do with GW Bush and the US Government?)

Most of the people I've met who "hate gays" were under 18, and had only ever met one, who they hated on a perosnal basis anyway
So a lot of it was ignorance, they saw gay people as "Pet Shop Boy singing Tutu wearing" sorts, I suppose, and were brought up only to know that it is "wrong", not that it "isn't contagious"

I would agree that the stigma is reducing, but then I don't know how the majority are thinking. I can say that most of the people I've seen in my life have had no problem with homosexuality (not my own, I'm engaged to a lovely lady
), with the occasional "As long as he doesn't try to touch me and stuff" attitude which can be expected from "young men" desperate to show their heterosexuality.

On a side note, I've met gay people who were great, funny, excellent people, and I've met ones who were complete *expletives*, so it's no different to anyone else. If you think "being around a gay" might turn you gay, you may want to consider your sexuality in a bit more depth before embarking on the wide world of romance.

Of course, Homosexuality brought us Will and Grace, and Ellen, which is a shame, but Heterosexuality brought us Dirty Dancing, Pretty Woman etc. so I guess we're equal
