A while back I was looking at an urban legends website. It said that the Candyman was a kid who ate so much candy that he turned into candy (highly implausible I know). If you say his name 3 times at night he comes out of a cupboard and tries to kill you. I'm not sure if the movie is based on the legend or the legend is based on the movie.

I am wondering whether the movie is based on the original urban legand or vise versa. Anyone know?

Yeh, the first and second CandyMan films are creepy as hell and well made (In my opinion). Best horror movie I've seen. Anyways, Candyman is just what it is...a myth.

I never had the guts though to actually say his name five times in the mirror.

i've never tried or heard about the candyman thing (nor have i ever seen the movies, actually), but i sure did hear of the bloody mary thing and the satan thing..
a friend of mine and i both went into the bathroom, completely dark, and we were about 9 at the time.
we had heard lots of stories about it, that if you said "bloody mary" to the mirror about five times (i think), you would see "something scary" in there.

we tried it, and of course, we saw "something" (i really can't remember what i actually saw). i do understand now that this was just our imaginations playing with us, seeing that we were already scared before we got in there. if you're already that scared, and you do believe you're going to see something, then you'll see something.

this did of course develop (we never tried the satan thing, though, that seemed too dangerous to do), and after a while, my friend said she saw strange creatures whenever she entered a dark room. not scary creatures, just.. colorful ones. if any of you have played the "banjokazooie"-game for n64, you probably remember those cute .. ninjos? i don't remember the exact name right now, but.. that's what she saw, small, strange creatures resembling the ninjos (this was years before the game was released, so it wasn't that she had got the idea from there. i just needed something to compare them to).
rather stupid, but back then, it was scary. i remember a whole flock of girls in the bathroom at school, turning off the light and doing the bloody mary-thing. scared out of our skin, we all ran back to the classroom :p

i also remember we made our own oujia board, and of course, we thought the glass we used moved by itself, but it was always one of us that did it to scare the others. after a while, we heard a story about "this girl who was a friend of a friend" that went insane after playing with an oujia board, so we never touched it again.

LOL, this brings back alot of memories! I remember about 6 years ago (Im 15 now) Me, my sister, my 2 cousins, were all sitting in my sisters room and we were daring eachother to go threw with it. Me being the unlucky one, had to go first, so when i got in the bathroom, alone, in front of a mirror in the dark, i had a plan. I opened the window, got out, started closing it and when there was about 1 inch left to close, i started screaming like crazy, then i fully closed it. When everyone else got it, i was outside laughing like crazy! and after that experience i have done the bloody mary and candyman thing many times with no result, i dont think there will ever be a result either. But to this very day, when my smaller cousins come to my house we dare them to do it, (but with the usual pranks) like hiding in the shower behind them and when they complete the chant we come out with a mask on and pretend were attacking them, or coming in threw the door with a mask, or my old window trick when they say '' okay ill do it, but only if you do it first!!!'' anyways, good times! Seriously, there is ABSOLUTLY NOTHING to be afraid of!

When I was about 11 started watching horrors and Candyman was the only horror film I Ever had to walk away from (Nightmare on elmstreet was funny). Anyway when I actually sat through the whole thing Probably at age 12 or 13 I went and done it in the mirror 5 times, but all I achieved was to scare the crap out of myself wondering if he was gonna come and get me, but here I am at 21, still alive.
Oh and we also got the bloody mary thing in school (in england) So its very common, but nothing ever came of that either. They are just myths and Candyman I think is only a film anyway (but the scariest film I ever saw, Oh the other film I couldn't watch was Jeff Goldblum in the fly but it made me wanna puke when he took his fingernails off, I had to walk away, it didn't scare me though).

Now what I suggest you do do is go into your bathroom when there is some light but dark(try it when moonlight is shining in) so you can just see yourself in a mirror and just stare into your own eye's or at 1 point on your face.
Nothing bad happens but as you stare it's almost as if your face changes or dissapears. It's not scary but odd, you have to keep the stare. Try this and post here what you think about it.

You dont get psychological movies then, the blair witch sucked as well I bet.
It's not horror like killing random people but it gets in your mind and freaks you out.
By the way if you came on a candyman thread (when knowing you dont like the film) just to say it sucked balls, WHY BOTHER???

When I was younger, there was a challenge set amongst my friends. You had to wait until you were home alone at night, go to the bathroom, close the door, turn out the light and stand facing the toilet. Next, you very slowly chant, 'Satan stroke my back', 13 times and then flush.

I had to go into the bathroom and do this not because i believed anything would happen but because it was hilarious and of course my back is fully intact. I make myself laugh.

when I was younger I used to make my friends to the bloody mary thing with me all the time. It seems funny how none of us on this thread can remember the number of times we actually said it.. or how many time you were supposed to say it... anyway, We used to do it all the time, but never followed through with any of the other things.. weren't you suposed to say the last time and spin in a circle or something? Its funny how urban legends change and grow into different forms of one original. I'll tell ya though, to this day, I will never ever ever say bloody mary in a bathroom, or around any mirror. also, mirrors in a dark room freak me out. shut all of the lights off in your bedroom and look in the mirror. scary ey? you bet.

I tried the Bloody Mary thing once, but I did the version where you just say her name 3 times while looking in the mirror. There's so many ways to do the legend, how on earth are you supposed to know if you're doing it right?:bnghd: Anyway, nothing happened. I'm definitely going to have to do the Candyman thing tonight.

I've also heard a theory that the Bloodymary chant only works on halloween. Anyone else hear that?

Why is he called Candyman if he has absolutely nothing to do with candy?

I just don't get it
