Just Great, now that Russia is the defender of the Islamic World I guess this means that she will go after Israel when they remove the Iranian Nukes in March.

Hmmmmm, I wonder what the people of Chechnya and Afghanstan think about this statement from Putin. The last time I looked the Russians tried to wipe out the Muslims opposition in both countries along with a vast majority of it's cizilian population.

Putin Calls Russia Defender of Islamic World.

Russia is the most reliable partner of the Islamic world and most faithful defender of its interests, Russian President Vladimir Putin said in Chechnya’s capital Grozny.

Putin unexpectedly visited the war-ravaged republic to speak in the local parliament that opened for its first sitting on Monday.

Lets see how the people of Russia support nations that condone that kind of terror if it happens to them again.

This is political rhetoric, nothing more. Russia is out for the cash, so when the $hit flies that will be the only deciding factor regarding Russia's loyalty. I suspect nothing will become of Putins "stance" on this.

I think is more than money, but about sphere of influence. Think about it, the US has much more influence in this region than Russia does, and I think Russia would like a pice of that action. Thats just my opinion, doesnt seem to be much out there on this yet.

Putin is playing a dangerous game.....and most Russians would freak out if they knew he is supporting Iranian nuclear ambitions and arming them...its only a matter of time before those weapons are turned against Russia.

Putin is supporting the same Thugs that provide support for the Islamic radicals Russia is fighting in Chechnya.....what a stinkin hippocrite and peice of garbage Putin is.

Russia has never been a friend of anyone. Their military is made up of Thugs, Murderers and extortionist and are as corrupt as their garbage-can government...in fact their whole society is in the garbage can! I can see why their former satellites are leaving them.

Putin and his cronies will pay for their crimes one day.......and pay big.

Weather its from their "Islamic friends" or from his own countrymen, Putin may soon find himself tied to a pole with a cigarette in his mouth.

Great quote, I love it! Very very true. You can't negotiate with these people whatsoever, they only understand one language and thats a gun to the head.

Defender of the Islamic world eh? More like armer of the Islamic world and only for as long as the cash is good. Any Muslim that does try it on with Russia never gets away with it. The Russians are ruthless and life is cheap. They have few Western sensibilities holding them back.

Still I really do wonder why they are arming Iran, Iran is a much as a threat to them as the rest of the West, if not more. Hmmmmmm.

Its just like the U.S. did in hopes of gaining their faith as an ally back before the fall of Shah. But it looks like the Russians dont seem to care about who they give the nuclear technology on this matter. Even if its an enemy.

Putin is an effective and shrewd leader, but most of all, he is a business man at heart. Keep that in mind when you consider that the Middle East is a hotbed source for selling Russian military hardware....

Putin's being a bussinessman, nothing more. Hell, most of the Islamic world can barely feed itself, much less provide niceties like reliable media.

They can, however, spend large sums of money on small arms and machinery, as well as the rights to manufacture said machinery and arms. He knows where the wallet lies.

Look at Beslan- the Russians know it's just lip service, and that Putin is more than willing to kill terrorists or any threat to the Russian state, no matter the cost.

Why is this not to be expected? Putin is "old KGB" and we all know they were a pretty hardheaded bunch and now that Putin has a little power, he will use it if it fits his need. But he lacks the commensense or he has heged some of his bets in the fact that the only reason an Arab pats you on the back is to find a soft spot for the knife.

Seekerof, those are just the facts. You don't see Saharan Africans or Southeast Asian terrorist groups running around with bleeding edge FN gear. These countries have been buying, producing and using Soviet technology for decades, and they keep driving themselves into debt to do it. Plus, now that the COld War has ended and troop numbers are at all time lows, all those surplus arms have to go somewhere, most likely a very screwed-up nowhere involved in a never-ending series of insurgencies and civil wars.

Business partner to the Islamic world, yes. But defender?

Putin is as snake tounged as Dubya. Im sure the central Asian republics, Afghanistan, and Chechnyans all see Russia as a great defender.

Im wondering if some Muslim leaders are offended by Putin giving "godless Russia" the mantle of "defender of the islamic Faith", something that is normally something only given to muslims anyway?

I doubt any Muslims really believe him at face value. Its really all about that neat Russian hardware they are getting.

Glance back through history. The Russians, whether they call themselves Soviets or Russian, can be trusted to be... well Russian. They are a strange people...and I don't mean that in a bad way, I love the Russian mind set, I don't nessaccarily understand it, but love it anyway (hmmm, not the only strange mind set...). Vladimir Putins mindset though seems only too clear, he is, or seems to be anyway, headed down the Chirac path of appeasment at any price, which I find oddly disturbing given what terrorists have done in his country (Belson, and the Theater, as well as many other events). I guess we just have to trust Russia to be Russia, they will walk their own path, no matter what.
