And thus this man provides yet more of the extreme polarization we really do not need in a debate like this. I am from the UK, we are supposed to be America's ally in this war of stupidity. You'll find most UK people have similar attitudes as the french towards the US governement. We feel strongly that our governement totally misrepresents its people. We don't hate america or ourselves, we hate the governments.

La Max - you say you have been fighting evil for over 200 years, and thats why most of the world hates you? what is your conclusion from this - that the rest of the world, bar a tiny minority, are evil?

I hate to say it, but I think there is a definate bias to US citizens as well as the policies of the US government. Not all US citizens, because the US has produced some fine quality human beings over the last few centuries, of this there is no doubt. American tourist dollars are certainly loved abroad, but from what I have witnessed, American tourist themselves are not. I backpacked Europe and have seen this to be true first hand. I met some awsome americans, friends who I am in contact with today, and I met some real (insert swear word of choice here) americans as well. I did not meet any rude, japanese, dutch, german, french, korean tourists. It seems these cultures were always well behaved when abroad, never met a single one that was in any way rude. Yes broad strokes indeed, but these are just my observations.

There is a cycle of stupidity that American citizens engage in that turns off the rest of the world. Why everyone should have a car in America for example is one of the reasons people hate americans. Europeans tend to be a bit more socially conscious as a whole.

I think another MAJOR reason that people want to make a Jihad on the US is because due to the rise of the internet, there is more information out there being circulated. People can dig into the USA's dirty past much more easily and thus there is more transpancey in US policy.

I think America is great a idea, gone off the rails in a bad way. Can somebody please fix it?

Not really, the Bush administrastion was voted in by the majority of us Americans and their supposed to represent us, so if the world hates our Government...than they Hate America.

Nah, just 51% of it

Seriously, in Europe and Asia I don't think there is much personal hatred towards Americans, it really is aimed at the whole "global dominance" thing and the US government. I deal with Europeans on a daily basis at work (including a lot of immigrants from the ME actually) and have yet to encounter any personal hostility - remarkable especially considering it's usually 2 in the morning when I am calling there.

Besides, considering how many Americans can't stand their own current government, does that mean Americans Hate America too?

Why everyone should have a car in America for example is one of the reasons people hate americans.

The US is a lot more spread out than Europe, in a way I think Europeans find hard to understand. The raw physical layout of the country requires individual transportation, mass transit only works well in urban centers.

I remember a friend who had some Dutch friends come to visit for a week, they had the idea that they would take a couple days of the trip to "drive to California" - they had no idea that such a trip would use up most of their week.

In Europe a four hour drive can take you across mutiple countries, here you're lucky to get through multiple states in the same time. Even here, in NJ, the most densely populated state in the country, the nearest convenience store is about two miles away (about the same to the closest bus stop). Without a car, I would be pretty much entirely out of luck here.

In urban centers it can be practical to live without a car, in the vast majority of the country it's a real handicap.

Lighten up, I was injecting a little humor into this debate.

Yeah, I guess the Iraqis who are free now might have a different opinion on this "war of stupidity"

Theres still chance Bush may pull this off....did you think changing the Middle_East would take overnight? We're fighting some of the most vicious people in the world.....did you think it would be easy?

This is'nt an episode of "West Wing" OK??...things don't get wrapped up in 50 minutes.

I don't think you represent most people in the UK paranoia, just a small loud minority thats wants to see your boys come home in defeat so you can say "I TOLD YOU SO"...thats all that matters to you.

I could care less if the whole world Hates our government....because most of the world is SCREWED up right now!!!

Most countrys hate the U.S. which is pretty obvious but Bush is not giving any of those nations a chance for cooperation. Just look at iran he had a thousand chances to start cooperating with us but all hes doing is saying were making nuclear weapons program, hell you guys are even being hated from most of south America right now, those countrys that are cooperating with U.S. are only using you guys just to get their hands on some military equipment. Just look at Israel they use to steal so much documentary secrets and are always being pushed around by you guys but why do you think they still are sucking up?.

Wrong. The Bush admin was voted in by the majority of those who bothered to vote. Some 20%-30% of the population. Why anyone would hate America is beyond me. How can you hate a country? I tend to find the majority of Americans who didnt vote the bush admin in more my kind of people, some 80%, or whatever the actual figure is. That's just the way it is.

I know some moderate Republicans and get along very well with them. They seem to be able to concede that this current administration is far from perfect and are not rabid supporters. They are very disappointed with what is happening since the election and have some regrets. These are intelligent people who think for themselves. Those are the kind of people I prefer to call friends.

First Off Wow La_Maximus you got an interesting worldview..
"We are Hated because we have the Guts to confront evil governments and set their peoples free. We represent all the hopes and dreams of the free world.....and thats why we're hated."

That goes down with the terroists attacked us because off our freedoms, no?

For me travelling and liveing in countries around the world is the greatest thing I can ever do with my life.
Saying that... it is just my opinion but I think the rest of the world hates America because our governments and peoples direct world culture and policy yet we are young country and most Americans know shockingly little about the world, world events, other cultures etc. Also Europeans Hate America bacause our citizens talk about being freedom and America being the "Greatest Country on Earth" when in reality that is a total load. Freedom is not an Exclusively American concept and America's definition of freedom (Big truck, Big T.V., liittle taxation etc.) dont equate with many europeans idea of freedoms (feee media, multiple political parties, public healthcare, etc.)

I believe people LOVE America for it's contributions to the world especially , music, books, space exploration, etc.

Oh and lastly LA_Maximus and others when did invading a soverign nation (Iraq or any other)
mean we could make them free? Tell that line to the people of Zimbawe (to name but one, no oil/money there) . That reminds me of my last point. People Hate America because our government and citizens think it is our RIGHT to decide for other countries like Iraq when they well be free! IT is is Their right, not ours! If you cant find it on a map dont invade it, new rule!

After doing some reading and thinking about it for a while, I am not so certain that the US is hated any more than it was before we entered into Iraq in 2003 to remove Saddam. So many people are believeing the hype that we are hated more now because we are not "minding our own business" in the middle east.

Here is my point:

1. Iraqis hated us BEFORE we went into Iraq.
2. Iran hated us BEFORE we went into Iraq.
3. France hated us BEFORE we went into Iraq.
4. Syria hated us BEFORE we went into Iraq.
5. Osama hated us BEFORE we went into Iraq.
6. The majority of the Islamic world hated us BEFORE we went into Iraq.
7. China hated us BEFORE we went into Iraq.
8. North Korea hated us BEFORE we went into Iraq.

You may have a tough time finding someone who DIDN'T hate us before we went into Iraq.

Yet all you hear now is how much the entire world hates us, but they hated us before. So what is the difference?

Do you really think that their minds will be changed if we do anything different?

Every time we have helped during natural disasters, they still hate us. It is because they feel as if they are beggars, so that just makes them hate us more for feeling that way.

Do we remove our troops to change their minds? We don't have troops in France, but they still hate us.

They all would still hate us just the same. How do YOU feel about it?

Let's try to keep this civil, rational, and the flames down to a minimum, please.

Flames down, civil, and rational:

Having negative feelings about someone and or a subject, and having a subject you feel negative about actively destroying something you believed in and threatening the way of life you know and the way of life that you love...

is there not an obvious answer to this?

I think you need to dig deeper into the question you ask.

well, i agree with maximus if you hate our government you hate us since we elected the bush administration, not once! but twice! what you really mean is the world doesnt hate americans that share their political view.

now does that mean because you hate us, so i hate you now? no, it means if you represent a threat to my country's security or interests, than your an enemy and will be dealt with.

People still believe in that BS?
If someone you hardly know or never made contact with starts knocking on your door and meddle in your life uninvited, ofcourse your gonna hate them for it.. I didnt see Osama asking for billions or threaten they will do this or that...

Perhaps your kidding yourself and know just like probally everyone else on here, that the US Gov't has been doing this for the past 50 years and more to attain the superpower status and keep it, all for "national interest".

Of course your enemies are goina hate you no matter what, but now America is hated by the public of it's allies.

In no country, ally or enemy can Bush land in, where he is not met with extreme protests and haters.

xman_in_blackx maybe one of the biggest reasons the US is hated so much are:

1. The arrogance you show while on the internet and travelling the world leads people to think all americans/America has a giant superiority complex.

2. Most of you pro US supporters label EVERY piece of news or evidence which could discredit you as propaganda or lies... Things like denying your goverment would use chemical weps, then as soon as they are caught out trying to defend them with legalities.

3. You always act as if you are the noble victim, the all caring country, while in reality you are the aggressors and meddlers.

4. The "the FRANCE/EU has always hated us" No that is not true at all, again your arragonce shines thru - we didnt hate you before the 4 years of lies and dececption you spewed out.

Maybe if you didnt act like the perfect godlike nation you try to portray yourselves as people wouldnt hate you and your goverment so much.

p.s i dont hate all americans, just the ones who think there country can do no harm, and those who defend the blatent lies which appear weekly out of the whitehouse.

I dont hate any anyone. Although I do dislike you fanatical religious zealots. You people love to be hated, it's what drives you. There will never be a moment where you (fanatical religious zealot extremist republicans) are not hated by someone, because you wouldnt have it any other way.

See? Go create your false enemies. Everything is a friggin comic book to you simpletons.

I think LA Maximus just ended the thread for us there, Its obvious to see why you are hated when you talk these lies, You invade other countries to support your own way of living, you dont liberate you plunder, You represent the hopes and dreams of the free world eh? Well tell me again the population of your country in prison or below the poverty line?

America wouldnt be half as hated as it is if you could just come out with the truth instead of hiding your murderous actions beind lies of liberation and freedom.

This is the kind of post that really makes me despise interacting with otehr humans. They think they are so cute and flippant, but they say stupid things.
I will leave it at that, rather than make an itemized response. Those with a mind and a vague recollection of history can recall the facts for themselves.

Netchicken, you aren't quite correct. When I was in Europe (for about 5 years, all together) the older people still had good feelings about our existence, but the younger generation didn't care for us at ALL! Younger generation, being folks who were my age.

No, they are in their 40's, and I imagine they like us no more than they did then. I kept them from speaking Russian and they didn't appreciate it. Why would they like us any more now that the obvious threat is gone?

Maybe its the way you go about it, " we are here saving your asses respect us cherish us brand us heros" People normally grow to dislike those people with inflated heads... And i seriously doubt Europe would ever be a russian speaking continent nor did i know russia had plans to conquer Europe.

It's kind of foolish to see some of the ATS members here still believe in the just and righteous image that U.S is representing. It seems that people see the U.S as the leader of mankind and also the police of the world. Furthermore, some of you even think the rest of the world is seen as the beggar and U.S the royal almighty queen that gets diss everytime she saves the day. The question that should be in the topic of this thread is why the U.S is being hated?

Back to the topic, no, I don't think the U.S is really hated more than it was before. This is because there has always been that constant hatred towards the west and especially the U.S as we have seen in the past and most notably by the Middle East. May I add too that the U.S is known for having slow responses to major natural disaster but is so swift if it affects their interests(e.g Iraq).

My opinion on why the U.S is so hated by the international community so much is because they are doing whatever it takes to keep their world's only superpower status strong. Even if it meant lying to the general public about their real motives.

Liar liar Bush on fire chant the kids.

That was exaclty what i was trying to get accross in my post only you phrased it better, if the US stopped trying to decieve people and openly declared they where doing such things for wealth and power, not others wellbeings they would be much less hated.
