I located something in the sky, and after prolonged observation. I've noticed it maintains a consistent orbit in view within the northern hemishere, eastern continental US.

For those interested in triangulating this object please u2u me, for description and approx. coordinates.

How are you spotting it, with a telescope?

It would be rare for an object to be geostationary as you suggest, yet not be above the equator.

So its in a locked orbit around the Northen Hemisphere? Perhaps its just a standard communications satellite. Although, they are usually in orbit around the equator.

It's not uncommon for Satellites to be seen in a daylight setting.

A satelite locked over the northern hemisphere?
Well now, that's interesting, I didn't know that was possible.
Go ahead and send me what you have Advisor, I have plenty of free time...

hmmm could be a gps satellite since they orbit out a bit further from earth and i can see some sitting in the northern hemisphere right now, but then they arn't really locked there... the only other satellite i'd say it could be would be chandra. it's sitting out quite aways from earth right now and it moves fairly slow it seems.

here's a 3d java applet. liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov... it will show you where all the satellites are (the non classified ones anyway). the applet will load as soon as you click the link.

Have you never seen this object before?

Wow, that tracking thing is cool. Looks like Earth really has rings.

Yes, and unusually enough. It hasn't deviated from it's elevation.

I know, it's not that funky goat star, mentioned in the new news section. This thing moves in a synchronistic orbit. What ever it is, I'm on to it now!

All that is needed to triangulate this thing is the times it is observed along with the approx. direction, last seen.

Due to weather patterns, I have not been able to get a good view of this object.

Are you not by any chance looking at Mars??

Its echelon satellite. They are monitoring everything we do.

you sure it isnt a sattelite?

that was my first thought, but all communications sattelites I'm familiar with are in geosynchronous orbit. that means they rotate with the earth and generally stay over about the same spot. not to mention this is only really possible over the equator, so the odds of one being over the northern hemisphere are pretty slim.

Could it be one of the directv type satellites? They are usually in a geosynchronis orbit.

Advisor, is this sattelite staying over relatively the same spot on the ground, or is it rotating around the sky?

It stays almost exactly at the same elevation, on the horizon. I'm still not sure of it's orbit path. It is not natural, it changes color rapidly and moves slowly if at all at times.

so it sounds like this particular satellite is geosyncronous. which isn't supposed to be possible anywhere but over the equator. something very odd is going on here.

Objects close to the horizon will SCINTILLATE, or seem to change colors due to the large amount of atmosphere that they are viewed through.

Could you have discovered a classified object?

Not sure, it could be...but odds are unlikely. Do to the fact it is easily seen with the naked eye. Of course hideing in plain sight has worked many times before. Maybe it is something, so far no one else on ATS has seen it, or admits to seeing it. Several people I pointed it out to see it just as i do. When I gt a good night and the scope on it, I will have more visual info. For now I am still trying to triagulate it.

So if anyone spots it, u2u me so we can verify.

I actually suspect that it maybe the space station, or something simular. Mostly do to the fact it appears closer than most other lights, but there is still the stationary quality along with the dang colors! I'm going to invest in a good high power telescope. Anyone know if Steiner makes telescopes?

My friends really isn't for moveing, and it takes two people to do so. Hence why I am waiting for a clear night. And this time year in Michigan, chances are slim. Especially with winter here, October snow, havn't seen that since 79. Or so the news is saying, stupid local meteorologists.

I say you're looking at Mars which is bright, has colors, is at relatively low elevation and seems like a definite object unlike stars. It's a new object in the sky as well...
