Wouldn't happen to be Newborough?
Can't find anything on google about bunkers, might be wrong place, but be interesting to know what it all turned out to be.

Lots of interesting places in the UK regarding underground places, nothing quite as extravagant as the US. No area 51's equivalent really either, maybe some research base, but if you look at lot of bases, they have residential areas or main roads close by.
I have read about there being an alleged base in the Brecon Beacons, I'm sure others have too. Its a major area for SAS training and other military activities though I doubt much underground.

Although likely untrue, the quarry tunnel at Box Tunnel, east side, was said to connect to RAF Corsham underground.

Pity there is no underground places near me. I live in a pretty boring county, there is a couple of old and new RAF sites, an MoD DISC centre and places but nothing much.
There was a bunker a mile north, built into the ground, but they demolished it to make way for a new house.
And one old bunker further north that has fallen into ruin, not sure how much of it remains, the surface building is collapsed a bit, underground area might be okay going by some photos from a year ago.

RAF Boulmer, it's so remote and has a huge radome on a mountain close to it. It reminds me a lot of area 51. It's near the border in Northumberland.

The base in Brecon is SENTA or Senny bridge training area I doubt there's much under ground there maybe some but nothing of major interest and the sas do use it often as its convenient to them being one hour from there base in Hereford although I wouldn't mind having a nose about SENTA I wouldn't advise it.

That areas full of training exercisses you go onto the land unautherised you would likely end being accidently run over by a tank.

I doubt run over by a tank but maybe a 105mm dropped on you by royal artillery or the range wardens picking you up and fining you for trespassing then escorting you off the range although if you go in via tirabad you can sit on the public road and watch live firing exercise and at night see the tracer fire.

Hi, Dont know if i should be saying this but as an ex serving military person i can guarantee a big underground base as ive seen it with my own eyes. Im unsure as to mention the exact details due to official secrets act but all i will say is "Ouston" near newcastle

I'm interested to know more about this if you feel you can say anymore, it's not very far from where I am. I've never heard anything about an underground base there, although I've never been sober while out that way. My sister lives just along the road from Ouston but I'm not sure it's a good idea to ask her if she knows anything about it.

@ EA006
He said an underground base, do they have airfields underground ?
Do you live in the area or have you been there with one of the armed forces ?
I'm just trying to work out why you asked about an airfield and if you might know something, please tell if you do thanks.

I just found out there are two Oustons so please ignore my questions above, thanks.
I think it's more likely the one with the airfield that The Saint was talking about. I hope he will come back and let us know, I'd love to know what's going on down there.

I live close to Albemarle Barracks (RAF Ouston) so I've always had an interest in this base, especially when I found out they store nuclear material there. As is common knowledge, there is a bit of one of the runways that has been made into a secure compound.

Have a look at some screenshots from Google Earth:

Overview of airfield and barracks (2009) - i41.tinypic.com...
Zoomed in view of compound (2009) - i39.tinypic.com...
Same view from 2007 - i41.tinypic.com...
Same view from 2002. Notice the three military vehicles and personnel assembled around what appears to be a white van - i39.tinypic.com...
It is this last image that intrigues me the most. There appears to be a rectangular building set inside a lowered ditch. I have read, though I can't confirm where (because I forgot), that this building contains a lift that goes to an underground facility. I can only assume that this is what thesaint was referring to. - i43.tinypic.com...

I have no idea what it contains or how large it is. I know of a couple of Royal Artillery soldiers who say that they don't go anywhere near that part of the airfield but there is a general feeling that there is something interesting there.

I'd love to hear from anyone else that has any information.

Thank you for posting that information and the pictures. I did look at Google Earth once I found out there was more than one Ouston but you showed me more than I found myself. It helps to have somebody who knows what they're talking about to point things out sometimes.

I tried typing Ouston underground into Google but it kept sticking an "H" in front of Ouston.

The saint didn't give any details because of the official secrets act so he might not say anymore about it, but we can hope. He did say he's seen it himself and it's big, if I get any information I will post it here for you but I didn't even know the place existed.

hi there,

as far as I am aware, the only bunker (semi sunken) is used for overnight storage of Nuclear convoys travelling from Coulport to Aldermaston. that was constucted / modified in Nov 1981. and came into use in Feb 1982.

there are no other underground structures , either from the cold war or more recent at Albemarle Barracks (RAF Ouston). ( there are a few ww2 era shelters dotted about)

When I was a kid I lived near woodford airbase for a while and the rumour was when the sirens went off for nuclear war (they went off every friday tea time to test them I always ran home asking If the bomb dropped) that they would open up the bunker and let 500 people in.
It was only a rumour but my Dad had worked out the route and everything, I don't even know If this bunker even existed.
