Military capabilities and/or economic strengths? If you combine both then the equation changes.
Then there are a number of other parameters to be considered, apart from just numbers:
>Quality of equipment.
>Force multipliers available.
>Quality of training.
>Jointmanship (Level of effective coordination between various wings of the Forces, i.e., Army, Navy, Air force, Marines, Para-military forces and so on in a war scenario).
>Effectiveness of intrinsic logistics support.
>Quality of the higher direction of war. (Top-level commanders).
>Economic/industrial strength to prosecute a protracted war.
>Quality of political leadership.
Considering the above, I would rank them thus:
USA
China
Russia
India
France
Germany
UK
Israel
Turkey
Pakistan

You do realise that the japanese were fighting the chinese, british india and other countries like Australia as well.
China alone had 1 million japanese soldiers and a large number of japanese fighters fighting there

And yet the U.S. lost to a bunch of peasants wearing flip flops... The will to fight is more important in war than any amount of ships and weapons. Throughout history, this has been shown true. There's no denying it... so why not incorporate that into ranking Military power?

The US fought in Europe too, and was going through a devastating depression with a lack of food supply.
And did the Chinese free the Philippines? Did they ever fight at the Battle of Iwo Jima and win? I think not.
