China says it is willing to use nuclear weapons against the US if it attacked by the US in a confrontation over Taiwan. Rumsfeld has voiced concerns over China.

China is prepared to use nuclear weapons against the US if it is attacked by Washington during a confrontation over Taiwan, according to a senior Chinese military official.

“If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” Zhu Chenghu, a major general in the People's Liberation Army, said at an official briefing.

This is scary to me. I don't trust Bush to heed the warnings, and I think he might be cowboy enough to try something. China has been a sleeping gaint for a long time. When they decide to move it is going to be in a very big way.

Just give em Taiwan. That little rock is gonna start WW3. I read somewhere that China has more people in thier military that we have citizens. I dont worry about to many things, but China makes me nervous.

Ok this one actually scares me.

China is probably the only nation able to do damage to the US, militarily speaking; though one can't help but think it's simply a huge willy-waving bluff-fest.

They have the means, and they certainly have the motivation if the US interferes too much.

And that's not good.

since China got the atomic weapon they have stated this, I have always thought it was common knowledge?

They wish to be left alone and not bossed about by any Nation, the only way to do that is to willingly be able to use an Atomic Weapon. It is why Iran also want such an item.

This is one of those reasons why we need more nukes and an adequete missile defense system. But personally I think that they're bluffing. I don't think even the Chinese goverment is crazy enough to get themselves wiped off the face of the earth by a retaliation strike over one little island.

I'm never sure why people are so adamant that it'd be the other guy who would be wiped off; are we seriously trying to say that the US would somehow be able to avoid major - if not absolutely catastrophic - damage here? It wouldn't happen like that; the US would face enormous damage, in terms of physical damage, human lives and damage to societal infrastructure, if it wasn't rendered utterly disabled first.

China would not be a "sure bet" as to the one who gets "blown off the planet".

I never said that the US wouldn't suffer major damage, but it's good old Cold War logic (those were the glory days when military buildups didn't need much excuse), China would not survive such an attack. MAD concept, you nuke us, we fire all our nukes while yours are still in the air. Simply put when it comes to nuclear warfare it's not how much you'll do to the other guy, it's how much he'll do to you. Yes, the US would be screwed, but so would China, everybody knows this. So even if they were crazy enough to annilate the US they wouldn't live to tell the tail.

I am almost positive that China wouldnt go into a full nuclear strike, I think they meant on US forces. Even if China did decide to launch a full nuclear strike the US would be able to see it coming and launch enough weapons to level China.

China have approximately 400 nuclear missiles and the US have over 10,000 nukes. I would suggest China to backpedal slowly with that silly comment.

Remember, the government of Taiwan is the legitimate government of mainland China, not that Communist usurpers who took over powers in 1949.

Regardless of nuclear power, it would come down to a war of attrition.......

I would hope the most obvious answer would be in plain sight for the US......China is simply not a force we are prepared to deal with.....

Here is part of the General's quote, from the interview in question:

“If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons,” said General Zhu Chenghu.

Let's discuss what is meant here. Does he mean JDAM bombs? I don't think that's what he means. The Party will not retaliate with nukes no matter what conventional weapons are used. That is, unless they mean to actually engage in city-for-city nuclear war, which could actually be plausible. Trading Los Angeles for Bejing, for example.

Let's all learn Chinese before running too far with this. I think what he means to say is, "If the US uses their guided munitions to deliver what may be a nuclear payload, China would have to respond with nuclear weapons also". I am giving him the benefit of the doubt because as it is worded, we can't really say for sure what he means.

I think this quote makes it pretty clear what China will do...

“We . . . will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds . . . of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese.”

and if such a war happened we'd all be crying, why o why did we launch the nukes?

Why did it come to this?

All the warmongers make me laugh.

YOU CANT FIGHT IN HERE!!!!!!!

This is the War Room!

China is ruled by old men who think they can threaten the west because they have Nuclear bombs, OK lets swap bombs and see how China can be a productive country in the world when its irradiated .

The sad thing is I think we have a president that is weak enough to allow the likes of Rumsfeld and Cheney to pressure him into giving the strike order.

I just hope Bush can see that he cant change everybody. Otherwise, we just might see how much hot air the Chinese General is blowing. Personally, I dont think its worth calling his bluff. Its a rock that gives walmart cheap shirts and sandals. I mean no offence to the Tiwainese. They are a noble and hard working people. Its just that Tiwain is of no significance to the US. So what if china has another place to put a base. We (the US) just got about ten new ones in the Middle East......

I realize that, but this would give American electronic companies an actual chance to get in the playing field. Which is a good thing. We need more electronic production companies in America. Its an area we are slightly behind in.
