U cant compare GSG9 with any SF millitary unit. Anti terror is their job everyday, speciel forces have their basic training besides that, like survival training, recon and combat-tactics. in best cases they use 30 % on AT training.
They also not just rely on the SAS- training, sure some have being trained by SAS, but they also devoleped and improved their own tactics and skillz.

Hmm I think you are right.

The SEKs (Sondereinsatzkommando) are comparable to the SWAT units.

Which SWAT team? To join an american SWAT team just join a police force that has a SWAT team and apply.

To join the GSG 9 you have to have german citizenship, between 1.65m and 1.95m tall, physically and mentally healthy and fit. Then you can apply to join the federal police, and when you have gone through 3 years of education and you saw some "time in the field" you can apply to join the GSG 9. Whether they accept you is another question

While we are at necroposting:

GSG 9 also won this years World SWAT Challenge, though not as dominant as last year. They won 4 of eight events, last year they won all of seven events. San Antonio SWAT again won a respectable 2nd place.

This year there were also teams from Taiwan (finishing 12th) and Bruce Power from Canada (finishng 8th).

GSG-9 is much more similar to CAG or SAS than to SWAT teams. SWAT teams are mostly used for missions that are not suitable for a standard policeman and when there is need for bigger firepower and protection. SWAT teams can be sent when a guy barricades himself in the house or he takes a hostage. They also do much negotiation before the entry and shootings are not very often.

CT teams are trained to take no risk and eliminate the targets and sent to much more sensitive missions. Do you think that typical SWAT team would be sent to eliminate plane hijackers? Well GSG-9 is sent to such missions, and that type of mission is very often trained by other CT teams, altough military, such as SAS or CAG. So in a way they can be compared to military CT teams altough they are much more similar to FBI HRT because both are domestic CT teams because the policy doesn't allow it, altough there are exceptions for the GSG-9 but I doubt FBI HRT ever did a mission outside US, surely because there is no need for it. For example the SAS is allowed to work both inside and outside the UK. HRT was created, because CAG was not allowed to do domestic CT missions. So it all depends of the country's policies.

I'm not sure if the GSG-9 should go to that competition and I think SEK is a more appropriate unit for that. Altough GSG-9 is not only CT unit it is also law enforcement unit so there is a link to SWAT teams and the mentioned competition.

All I know is that I'm 5'4" and 1.65 meters is exactly 5'4"! Wohooo! i wanna join GSG-9!
do they take heavy set guys with a chocolate ice cream addiction and chocolte stains all over his face? I fit that catagory! Maybe they can use me as a distraction.

Actaully, All i know is that marcinko said that GSG-9 got along with SEAL 6 real well, were the most similar personality wise. And were on par with them in regards to marksmanship skills, dynamic entry skills, etc. back in the 80's. So, whatever they are doing now you can count on them being consumate proffesionals at it.

Marcinko also say's that the current FBI HRT kicks some ass too. So it would be cool to watch them team up, although I'm sure GSG-9 and HRT already have cross trained with each other.

you're right GSG-9 trained with HRT, trained with 22nd SAS, GIGN and NOCS too.

What I want to know is how close some of those other swat teams came in comparison to GSG-9. cause it says a whole lot about how serious swat teams are trying to get with their programmes. It's good news for the swat to even come close to being comparable to GSG-9. Gives me a little more respect for the swat which has gone from the catagory lottsa up a notch to mondo.

you're right. SWAT teams should get alots of congratulations. i'm not sure who would win if they invited the german SEK instead of GSG-9 or if they compared GSG-9 with HRT.
Last year GSG-9 got 4/8 events and won 24 points. San Antonio SWAT won 29 points(less points=better ranking) as far as i remember.

Hmm ok i cant read all this without writing something. The German GSG9 Grenzschutzgruppe9 is not a military comando unit. The members of GSG9 are all police officers, they have no survival training or other military training. The GSG9 can be compared with German SEK units with the difference that SEK units are from the local police and GSG9 is from the german bordercontrol. GSG9's job is to free hostages in buildings, airplanes, cars .... So the GSG9 has the same job than SWAT units in USA.

The German military elite comando units are called KSK (comando special forces), only they are the counterpart of british SAS or Navy Seals .... The KSK have special vehicles and equipment and their job is for example operating behind enemy lines, currently the KSK is in afghanistan and they hunt together with american forces the taliban.

The history of both units is interesting.

The GSG9 was founded after the olympic games in munich. All isreali hostages were killed in an attempt to free the hostages from a normal police unit. After that failed attempt the GSG9 was born and their most famous mission was Mogadischu 1977. 4 arab terrorists captured the Lufthansa Jet "Landshut". The Arabs forced the Pilot to land in mogadischu. Germany gave their final OK to clear the situation and GSG9 killed the arabs in the plane.

The 2004 accident in iraq was an ambush. 2 Officers from GSG9 working as Bodyguards for the german embasy in bagdad travelled in a convoi from Amman to Bagdad as the last car came under fire from machine gun. The 2 officers inside had no chance. The Iraqi rebels later appologized in a letter, they thought they were americans in the jeep. 3 weeks later the body of Tobias R. was found in a street in iraq. The other body is still missed.

The KSK was founded in 1996. The key point for founding a military comando unit was the protection of german citizens in ruanda 1991. Germany had to ask a Belgian special comando unit to rescue german citizens from african rebels in Ruanda (civil war). Germany was unable to rescue their citizens and after that incident the KSK was founded. In the early days they were supported by british SAS and american trainees. Tthey did several sucessfull missions in the Kosovo war and are operating today in afghanistan.

Some years ago i saw in TV that the LAPD won the contest and GSG9 was second.

The SAS is classed as a SWAT team ? This is for police and paramilitary forces not the military moron

GSG-9 during the 80's were climbing oil derriks in the north sea with SEAL team 6 in crosstraining excersizes, according to Richard Marcinko. Sounds like even though they are technically police they do have a lot of military and CT, SF training.

I like the KSK too. But GSG-9 is capable of much more than just SWAT stuff. Which is why it's a good thing that other SWAT teams can even challange the GSG-9 in competition. It means that the SWAT teams are serious about what they do and that more lives than before will be saved in the future when SWAT is needed.

this competition says like that crappy US programme where it has ex swat SF guys playing their silly games with lazer systems. You would have thought the swat/gsg9 guys would have more important things to do. Guess its inbuilt in the US culture they even film their supposed hostage rescue missions as in the case in Iraq when they staged that rescue of that woman soldier so lame

sure can other swat teams challenge the GSG9 in this olympic games of swat. In this olympic games they just do what every other swat team do every day. Shooting, running.... nothing special about it.

For climbing oil dereks we have the KSK now, maybe the GSG9 has done this in the 80's but not anymore. The Gsg9 do only Swat stuff. Some years ago the LAPD Swat won this competition. After the first Kosovo mission of the KSK an american general told the German general :"Welcome in the club"

KSK kicks ass, but GSG-9 is capable of much more than just swat stuff even though thats all they do now. maybe the instructors from GSG-9 that were teaching them to climb oil derricks and stuff went over to the KSK program, I think that is possible.

I like the KSK too, by the way.

I'm just saying that it's a good thing that SWAT teams are getting as competant as the GSG-9. It means more lives can be potentialy saved the next time SWAT gets called in.

Also, I would like to see FBI HRT in action, supposedly they have made a lot of headway with their abilities over the last few years.

is there any relation between the german GSG groups and Polish GSP?

similar letters are found all throughout each other's police forces and counter-terrorist groups but the languages are completely different.

www.specwarnet.net...

GSP isn't a SWAT team though, they are SF divers much like the SEALS and British SBS
