70% of French Prisoners Are Muslim

I thought this is interesting, in light of what of is being said about supposed U.S. intolerance towards members of the Islamic faith:

PARIS, June 19, 2005 (IslamOnline.net) – French prisons are teeming with Muslims, a phenomenon chaplains and sociologists blame on marginalization and towering poverty and unemployment rates among the Muslim minority.

“It really harms the image of Islam and Muslims in France that prisons are teeming with Muslims,” Mamdo Sango, a Muslim chaplain, told IslamOnline.net.

Iranian-French researcher Farhad Khosrokhavar said in his recently published book Islam in Prisons that Muslims make up some 70 percent of a total of 60,775 prisoners in France.

How many Muslims are there in France? It seems incredible to me that 70% of their prisoners would be Muslim.

I think they're about 10% of the population of France.

every1 is racist now..y such a big deal about the muslims? i mean here in america were racist towards some mexican groups and all ..but i mean every country has its back towards some ethnic group

France has the largest muslim population of any european country.

The unfortunate thing about the muslim population in France, at least in my opinion at least, is that for the most part they are segregated (mostly living in projects) and there are laws passed that actually do a lot to make them feel even more alien, such as the whole not allowed to wear the veil thing.

I really think France is going to have a serious problem on their hands eventually if not soon.

Again, I'm not fully aware of all things muslim or french so I may be wrong, usually am.

Still it seems the proportion of prisoners vs. the proportion of the population is way out of whack.

How do you think this corresponds with the blacks in US prison systems? Or is that apple and oranges, and if so, why?

Notice how the clerics blame "marginalization, towering poverty and unemployment rates" as the cause of the high Muslim crime rate.....instead of taking responsibility for their own actions. They blame everyone else....the French were kind enough to take them in and look what they gave in return.

I wonder how many are on Parole?

that certainly puts things in perspective

First thing those people most of them are from North Africa and some even dont speak Arabic at all.

They have similar reason as African Amercains. Most of the live in Ghettos.


But remeber they are different than those for the Eygpt and those are even different from those in Saudi Arabia Syria Lebeone... ect


They have different culture than other Muslims and some even dont know some basic stuff about islam

Muslims segregate themselves from "non-believers". No one is doing that to them. That's why they don't mix into western countries. It's like oil and water (get it?)

I notice that some of you U.S. bashers are already running with this quote as if God had inscribed it on stone tablets.

I really don't know about this but it seems sort of strange.
You've got to wonder though which comes first so to speak, the fact that muslims are prisoners or the prisoners are muslims? i'm not working fom any data but it seems to me to be sort of obvious that this would happen, poor people seem to commit most crime, the poorest people in France live in high rise towers (la cité or téci), most of these people happen to be from former French colonies and also happen to be muslim, its not exactly a shocking revelation.

centurion1211, I found it hard to believe as well so I did some very cursory searching and from here and here
I found that it is pretty much true, which was quite surprising (obviously this was just a quick check and could easily be wrong).

I'm sure you would agree centurion, somnium delenda est!

shrugs, at least it shows France aint no different from America and they just putting poor black French Muslims into prisons. and for no reason except that they are Muslims and dont like nonbelievers and France knows so they put them in, and they are trying to control this epidemic .
