Energy Wave,

I agree, the disappearance of the large quantities of water is very worrying... It is not unsual for a fracture to open and allow the water to drain into the magma chamber.

When the water hits the magma, it obviously vaporizes, but is also enters solution with the magma fluids and increases the pressure. During eruption, the water vapor readily comes out of solution when the pressure drops as the magma is ejected. As it does so, it increases in volume geometrically, increasing the magnitude of the explosion logarthymically.

In other words, the water draining away is a VERY bad thing.

Unbalanced,

I dont know that the FEMA protocols were specifically set up for this, as quite frankly, I doubt that anyone in the government, or the Cabal would be geologically astute enough to recognize the potential hazards of the Yellowstone caldera, or to plan accordingly for it.

However, in the event of a supercaldera eruption, it would certainly be well within the scope of the FEMA protocols to be intiated.

This is partly seasonal but could also be descriptive of the problem. The gauge height at the Yellowstone Lake outlet has dropped considerably in the last month. I would suspect they're holding as much water in the lake to keep the pressure on the "inflated plain".

That is a good assumption, although risky... If a fracture were to occur in the bottom of the lake, it would allow millions of gallons of water to infiltrate into the magma chamber. That would instantly flash into steam and cause a huge geothermal explosion similar to Krakatoa.

It would be a tough call. Too much pressure may cave a section in. Too little pressure and it blows. I feel sorry for the geologist that has to play this balancing game. Can't be easy.

Strange thing is earlier this year, I was listening to a morning radio show. They had a supposed psychic on the show.

This was very strange for me to listen, as this particular show isnt the type to have such a guest, and I usually dont put much credence in psychics anyway. But for some reason, I wanted to listen to it...

His prediction was that one morning in the near future, we would all wake up and find out that something had happened overnight to completely destroy the west coast.

At the time, I thought this was a reference to a sneak nuclear attack from North Korea...

Now, I wonder if he was talking about Yellowstone....

Eyewitness Reports of Yellowstone Super-Volcano Activity...09/14/03
by Mitch Battros (ECTV)
I have recently received two reports sent in by P. Dalton. claiming two people have sent in eye witness reports of their recent visit to Yellowstone Park. I have not confirmed these statements, so please read with discernment.

I would like to make a call to all who are living in the Yellowstone area, or who have recently visited the park. Please send in your personal 'eye witness' reports to the following address: mailto:[email protected] Please include photos if possible. Also, if applicable, please add local government documents showing certain areas of Yellowstone Park are closed. Include the text with whatever explanation given to such actions. I will post your report after confirmation of source.

First report:
"Hello folks, next door neighbor just got back from a weeks stay in Yellowstone. we talked and I was told a lot more camping areas have been closed off besides around the Lake. he is an avid fisherman, said the fish are floating dead in the streams, and the lake is closed. A very strong smell of H2SO4 (sulfur) People were leaving due to smell.

Second report:
"Yellowstone is worse than we thought. The husband of my daughter's social studies teacher is staying at the Crow Reservation in Montana, 100 miles from Yellowstone. He said that over and above everything we have heard to date (which he says is absolutely true), there is a large dead zone of animals and vegetation. Immediately outside this dead zone, vegetation has stopped growing and animals are migrating out of the area. New geysers and mud pots are springing up daily. You can physically see the ground bulging up, not only at Yellowstone Lake, but in several places in the park. They have closed more areas to the public than is being reported. There are several areas where the ground temperature tops 200 degrees. And earthquakes are becoming a daily occurrence."

My interview with Dr. Bruce Cornet has made international headlines. You can listen to our tantalizing interview on ECTV's "audio/video" page: www.earthchangestv.com...

We have also been published on several national and international news agencies.

Again, all those who live in the Yellowstone Park area, please send in your eye-witness reports. I will post your report after confirmation of source.

News from China:
english.eastday.com...
``Our goal is to understand what's driving the volcanic system, and are there indications it could be moving into a period of unrest?'' said Jacob Lowenstern, a researcher for the United States Geological Survey

The far east is looking at it now.
....

www.billingsgazette.com.../2003/09/13/build/wyoming/30-ynp-tests.inc Mercury Levels:
In the 1999, USGS tested water samples from 92 high-elevation lakes in the West. The numbers were so high in Yellowstone that they had to be tossed out because they skewed the rest of the data so severely, Krabbenhoft said.

.....

It sounds link there has been a increase in mercury since 99' but now it sound like the USGS is downplaying it.

just a thought.....

Dammit,

What hasnt the USGS issued an eruption alert????????

Screw the potential political impacts, this is something that is going to kill people!

At this juncture, they should be investigating and implementing contingency evacuation plans, start mapping wind currents and making notification/contingency plans for the projected fallout areas, and get FEMA on the line for a potential natural disaster.

It is UNCONSCIONABLE that they are deliberately downplaying something like this!

August 2003 Yellowstone Seismicity Summary

During the month of August 2003, 101 earthquakes were
located in the Yellowstone region. The largest shock to
occur during this report period was a magnitude 4.3
earthquake on August 21st at 07:46 UTC, located about
23.3 miles south southeast of West Thumb, Wyoming and 9
miles southeast of the south entrance to Yellowstone
National Park.

Earthquake activity in the Yellowstone region is at
background levels.

Eruption Warning and Real-Time Notifications
The best warning of a volcanic eruption is one that specifies when and where an eruption is most likely to occur and what type and size eruption should be expected. Such accurate predictions are sometimes possible but still rare in volcanology. The most accurate warnings are those in which scientists indicate an eruption is probably only hours to days away based on significant changes in a volcano's earthquake activity, ground deformation, and gas emissions. Experience from around the world has shown that most eruptions are preceded by such changes over a period of days to weeks.

A volcano may begin to show signs of unrest several months to a few years before an eruption. In these cases, however, a warning that specifies when it might erupt months to years ahead of time are extremely rare.

Well, Im glad they at least KNOW what an eruption warning is supposed to be... was starting to wonder, SINCE THEY HAVENT POSTED ONE YET!!!

I would strongly suggest the main contributors of this thread gather together and create an official ATS research project. And do it quickly!

Just how long do they intend to wait to alert the public of the threat?
This is very concerning... with something of the magnitude there should be a public notice or warning at least preparing people..
I don't know when is the right time to say pack your bags I just hope people will have time to do it before something happens although it seems highly unlikely that will happen.

The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory's nuclear waste incinerator?

This incinerator will burn 200,000 tons of radioactive waste imported into Idaho from all over the world.

My guess would be if Yellowstone blows, most Idahoans are going to care less about INEL. This of course depends on the impact Yellowstone has period.

I grew up in Idaho. I know more than I ever care to about INEL. But, would be very much less worried about INEL than Yellowstoneat the moment.
