Asked what the effect of a North Korean nuclear test would be, Mohamed
ElBaradei told reporters: "There will be disastrous political repercussions in Asia and the rest of the world. I think there could be major environmental fallout, which could lead into dissemination of radioactivity in the region."

I think a big difference will come from whether or not they test it underground or above ground. An above ground test will result it pretty loud protests from China and Russia, while below ground will still result it protests, just not so loud...

The US, Soviets, UK, Chinese, Indians, and French have all conducted nuclear tests, and yet the human race has not died of radiation poisoning.

I think NK plans a nuke test, but only in order to prop up their failing extortion campaign.
Their command economy is failing miserably and they need money.

I'm shocked the U.S. government isn't planning an invasion of North Korea.

Is the obviousness of it too much to handle? Or do they prefer the "mystery and suspense" of something like Iraq?

they can't invade because the South Koreans wont let the U.S. gov do it. some in South Korea believe that there is a chance of a reunification in peaceful ways
. aniways the U.S. gov is waiting for the North to detonate the nuke test so we can show the world as well as South Korea that the North is definitely intends to invade South like they did over 50 years ago.

If we are to go to war with NK, it wouldn't be an invasion. We'd just bomb them until we got tired.

If they conducted a nuke test, then we'd bomb them for a while then let some other country (SK?) do the invading (as we'd have most of the world on our side).

Do you think NK would just sit there and take a bombing? They have nukes and missles to deliver them.... I don't they're just for show.

anyone notice the location, where fallout will most likely extend into russia, china and japan...i dont think they will respond very well to such a test.

it's not just nukes you gotta worry about with N.K., they're one of the largest proliferators of Chem. and Bio. weapons as well. Not to mention they have of the most insane "Indoctrination" cultures anywhere, for alot of those people Kim Jong Ill is god. They have to sing songs praising him every morn. like U.S. kids say the pledge. The kids get candy for saying anti-western things in class or to policemen.

I can't imagine they'd be stupid enough to test nukes above ground, they're a small country......no test site remote enough to keep from harming it's own citizens. No, I think if they test it'll be an offshore underwater test.........or on another nation!!

It is a nuclear test, that is all. As others have said, many countries have made such tests. We are still here.

No big deal.

I think the ones around Kim are pushing him to disregard the worlds protocol on the testing ban. I do not feel his is bright enoungh to go ahead with knowing he will be the one using the shovel to bury hiself and his country with him.

i can bet you that the US has a plan somewhere to invade every single country, it is just keep away untill if we do need to invade any country needed to be.

My guess is that they want to have proof that they have the ability before doing anything to avoid the "no WMD" fiasco. If they detonate, there can be no doubt that North Korea has the means and the intent. Then they will have all the justification they need.

Nice and simple.
