I hope it was just a bird strike and not anyone else, but if it was a missile of some sort, the jet got into trouble over Russian controlled territory, so certain conclusions will be drawn from that fact.

The pilots that I have seen commenting on the original video says the plane was being controlled by the engines similar to the Sioux City incident (alternating thrust to the port and starboard engines for left and right, and throttle for up and down control), which indicates the engines were fine but there was no control of the vertical and horizontal stabiliser at the back of the plane.
