Thank you for your reply.

What you may not know is that many babies are routinely genetically tested long before birth. For example, my grandchildren, all 3.

OB/GYN's offer parents the option of genetic testing for issues early in the pregnancy. My daughter took that option all 3 times, as many do. It is becoming nearly routine now.

My oldest grandson was genetically normal. My youngest grandson is not genetically "normal", he has Down syndrome, and my daughter decided to have him, and was prepared for the issue at birth. This was great because she had therapy lined up for him at 2 weeks old because she know what was going to happen. As a result of being prepared, my youngest grandson has had 3 therapists weekly until he entered public school. The state paid for the therapy and is paying for public school at age 3 with therapists. As a result he is what therapists say is one of the brightest DS babies they have worked with, his body is about a year or so behind, but that is ok, his mind is good thanks to early intervention and a positive attitude on the part of his family. My third grandchild is genetically "normal".

So this is not a rare thing to have done. It probably should be routine during early pregnancy and paid for by insurance or medicaid. I don't know where my grandson would have been if it were not for the fact my daughter and entire family were prepared, informed and ready to help my darling grandson reach his full potential.

At 3 he knows most of his alphabet upper and lower case and speaks in 3 word sentences, is an emotionally "normal" child. He is not the stereotypically "happy" DS, but has a range of emotions and isn't afraid to let them show. Would he have been like this if the family were in shock at birth? Probably not.

I am all for genetic testing for all pregnant mothers, early in pregnancy. So they can make the choice, pre-viability (able to survive outside the womb), early in pregnancy. Which is actually the choice of most conservatives, even Trump that I know. Abortion very early in pregnancy is sad, some agree immoral, but should not be illegal for many reasons, especially if genetic testing is mandatory.
