A short time ago SpaceX launched their 5th Starship test flight and successfully returned it's Super Heavy Booster Rocket to Starbase in what has to be the most Sci-Fi way imaginable ... check this out.

We're in the future baby and SpaceX are leading the way , absolutely incredible !

I realize the word "epic" has been used largely out of context for a while now, but that was EPIC.

It should be easier than landing on a moving ship, but getting it right the first try?

Simply amazing!

I watched it live.

Jaw dropping.

What an achievement

That thing is 3 times more powerful than a Saturn 5!

Man I love innovation. So refreshing to see space exploration, robotics and EV being taken from the stagnant and incompetent government funded realm and actually being innovative.

Sad most government contracts still go to the old guard stagnant companies that have grown fat from government subsidies like ghoulish socialist parasites bleeding the people dry of their tax money while offering up half baked sub par products that don’t deliver.

I like the guy makes cool stuff, I agree about most of what he has to say. Has a boat load of kids I can really respect that, the man knows what’s import it isn’t money in the bank it’s your genes existing on this space rock.

That was like watching sorcery.
Amazing.
Gotta hand it to SpaceX,that was top notch to pull that off on the first try.

Still got my doubts about the Mars plan working out,but I would be happy to be proved wrong on that.

I don't understand what we're seeing. Looks like a booster stage descending in a controlled manner and being clamped.

I know mate , it's like watching something you know can't happen actually happen.

Imagine if Elon was in charge of NASA how much further forward we would be now , probably already on Mars is my guess.

The booster stage was turning around and came back to its own starting point - after it did what is was supposed to do - bringing Starship to orbit course.

Oh...Thanks. I'll have to read more about this to learn why everyone is so excited.

Bringing it back down so precisely, in one piece and upright, is quite mind blowing.

And, at the first try?

It means it is reusable.

Imagine how expensive it would be to fly between say the UK to the US if the plane has to be scrapped when it got there.

That's the thing.

Thankyou. We've seen several Space-x ships return/descend to the launch pad. There must be something extra special with making a booster stage do the same.

OP says this was the 5th test flight. What happened to the booster rockets connected to the first 4 flights?

We are seeing something never before seen , we've seen a booster land on a barge but due to the size of Falcon heavy that isn't an option so SpaceX caught it using the gantry which when you think about takes so much more precision to achieve.

It's an incredible thing that's nothing short of a technological marvel.

This Monster is the largest and most powerfull rocket mankind has produced so far. And it not only returned to its starting position, it has been catched by robot arms.

Yes it was the 5th test, the former produced some epic boooms. Returning it was not tried before.

Also what Starship it self has done today is amazing by all means. That Thing did reentry and landed within 50 meters where it should have in the sea - after 30mins on the other side of the Planet.

The innovative, dedicated and strict application of the scientific method enabled this incredible feat of engineering.

It should be celebrated as one of humankind's premier achievements, as all of the others that we have accomplished in our history, even as we still cannot totally understand how many of them were done.
