I don't think people really understand what he did with his rank. The other part of how he was in the military for 24 years is total BS too. Yes, he played Weekend Warrior for 24 years, but that isn't anywhere the same as someone in the military 365 days a year x 24.

For retirement, you get 1 point per day you are in, and so after 20 years you end up with around 7,300 points and that equals 50% of your base pay for retirement. If you stay in 30 years you get 75% of your base pay. I was in 28 years, so my retirement is 70% of my final base pay.

With the Guard/Reserves unless they are on full time they get about 30 days a year in points compared to 365 days for active duty. This means you are a civilian for 330+ days of the year and work a civilian job etc. There are times they need to go on full-time orders such as when they go to a military school for training or deployment etc, and I think they get extra points a year for staying in the Guard/Reserve, and their retirement doesn't kick in until they are 60 where active duty gets it day one on retirement.

Saying all this, Waltz's retirement is 10 years and that is 25% of his base pay, and he can't start collecting until the age of 60 because it is below the 7300 needed for 20 years. His actual time in uniform was most likely about 3 years.

I love my guard/reserve brothers/sisters, and this is the first time I ever heard someone talk like him as to what their military career was like.

I disagree with that description. If they were simply being overzealous (or going overboard) on their original ideals, it might have unintended consequences, but at least it would be coming from a place in their hearts that want to see people rise up.
