I think being a hermit is the only way you can be true to yourself without subsuming what makes you, you into the general will.
Doesnt matter what group you align with, there are always rules, expectations on how you will behave, whether thats at the office, at the club in Whitehall or as a member of your local bike club. The only freedom is to be alone.

You could also find a group of creatures that you have a good chemistry with.

Because don't you think the echo chamber would lack some challenges in the long run?

Even then you might find yourself modifying some of your behaviour to fit the group's view of you.
