They had a 40 mile long convoy headed straight to the heart of Kyiv in the first days of the war. Except they're terrible at logistics and damned thing ran out of fuel in the worst possible spot and it became a shooting gallery for Ukraine.
If you don't think that convoy was deployed with the intention of taking Kyiv and ending the war quickly, you're delusional.

Since you mentioned the politics angle, here's my view on things. Just a few weeks ago Trump was bragging about how the only way Gershkovich is going to get released is if he's President.
Fast forward and now Biden's out of the race and Harris is coming in hot. I think Putin lost faith in Trump winning the Presidency and offering him a sweetheart deal so he decided to take what was on the table worried the next deal would be worse for him.
