Chicago shootings: 109 shot, 19 fatally, in citywide holiday weekend gun violence, CPD says

CHICAGO (WLS) -- One hundred and nine people have been shot, 19 fatally, in gun violence across Chicago since Wednesday during the extended Fourth of July holiday weekend, police said.

Superintendent Larry Snelling and Mayor Brandon Johnson both called for accountability for those responsible for the shootings.

Johnson was pressed to address what adjustments need to be made to keep the community safe, his response was simply getting more support.

Years ago, this weekend along with the week at large was a lock for the most violent of the year. However, since the wheels came off in late May of 2020, it has become another lead-filled, mostly peaceful, often violent, occasionally unacceptable, root-caused, silly decisioned and absolutely, 100% demonization-free weekend with an extra day or two thrown in to pad the stats.

It's good that we don't have those strict gun laws around here like they have in Chicago. I like it when someone getting shot is rare here. Here, lots of people have guns and criminals think twice before banishing a gun because they might get shot.

If criminals know most households and people have guns, they are less apt to break in or pull a gun on someone. I know lots of people with concealed weapons permits around here and many of them would shoot someone who starts shooting at people.

I personally don't have a concealed weapon permit anymore, I had one for like eight years back in the eighties and nineties but actually never carried it in public. It was more about being able to transport my guns than protecting myself.

Just hold on one damn minute here.....You mean to tell me all those new gun laws in Illinois don't work ?

I mean, they banned 170 types of guns, you need a FOID card just to buy ammo and jump through endless hoops to get a CCL and that didn't pan out ?

I thought all the criminals would throw down their guns and turn themselves in.

that would be interesting. Compare whatever statistics matter in this case, and do a before the stupid law, and after look. Then the facts would be quite clear. It worked or it didn't.

Memorial Day weekend is usually the worst.

Basically, any weekened with good weather and block parties will usually result in a lot of shootings.

The gang members like to "spin the block" when sun is out and their rivals are out at a BBQ.

It is pretty much all teenage gang members (both victims and shooters). The numbers are mind numbing but the reality is that unless you are a black male under 25, an active gang member, and lives on the south and west sides.... the shootings might as well be in Rwanda.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson blamed over 100 people being shot in Chicago last weekend on former President Richard Nixon in his press conference today.

Yea, you read that correctly, this mayor states: “We had a chance 60 years ago to get the root causes and people mocked President Lyndon B. Johnson and we ended up with Richard Nixon.”

It is worth noting that Johnson is possibly the most racist president in American history even being linked to the KKK in the CIA JFK files that were released in 2023.

I was stationed in SE Michigan for a while in the late 90's. One day I had to drive down through east Detroit for a part for my boat. I got about 75% of the way there and realized that I still had my .44 mag under the passenger's seat. Had I been pulled over, I'd probably still be in jail to this day. But, I wasn't pulled over.

I went about my business (picking up a part for my boat), and went back up to Harrison Township along Lake St. Claire where my boat was. After working on my boat for a while I came back to my Blazer...only to find two (2) 9mm bullet holes in the tailgate. One of them went through my back seat and I found the bullet under the carpet on the floor under the passenger's seat. Must have happened when I was inside the boat place down in Detroit.

I was born and raised in Harrison Twp, MI and I still live in the area.

Detroit is not as bad as it used to be and it’s certainly not as bad as Chicago, although there was a few shootings in the D over the weekend.
