If I send a reply to another DM, can they see it?

Can they reply to it?

I've had several DM's lately where I reply, but I never hear back. Some of them I would expect to hear back, but I get nothing but silence.

Is this a glitch, where DM's are one-way only, or are they just not replying?

Thanks!
FCD

Some get through.
Some don't.
There's been issues with PMs on ATS for several years, before Bill sold the place.

Some appear read when they are not.

If it were me?
I'd use private email, Discord or DI for DMs.

Yeah, ATS is suspect.

Ditto. Plus I sent you an original DM as a follow up message (shortly after I sent my reply). You should see both my reply and the original message, so (2) messages total.

Understood. It was nothing important, just some trivial stuff. I just didn't see a reply when I asked a couple questions and this got me to wondering if the 'reply' function was in-op.

Or just reply in a thread directly, why the need for private messages? At the very least I expect a FOI request after several years and I don’t want to see those messages redacted!

Not a good solution to make private communications public, and it dilutes the thread topic.

LOL...well I'm not too worried about the DM's I'm discussing here. As DTOM correctly points out, most of the message traffic is not topic related (in fact, probably the bulk of it is..."Hey Mod, Why did you delete my post??!??!!!?"...LOL!) But seriously though, would you want to put your email address out on a public forum?

But specific to your point about redaction...actually some of it very much would be redacted. And it would be redacted by LAW because it contains PII (personally Identifiable Information) which is covered under federal disclosure laws.

Just FYI.

That’s a fair point about PII, and I get the off topic issue, you understood I was joking though and referring to some of the FOI requests that have so much redacted there is barely any information to be had at all…

As it happens I have a business so my email address is publicly available as is my phone number, strangely enough I don’t get that much spam or unrelated phone calls.

However I want to share that there is no real privacy on the internet, I am shocked by people who link all there accounts and passwords together for convenience. When I first roamed the webs you never gave your correct PII not any of it, and I still don’t if possible. Only the government and my banks have that stuff, and well, it’s not as if they can be trusted with it either. The main thing people have to be on guard about is identify theft and fraud scams.
The big data they have on you is anonymised by law. I don’t think biometrics and all these so called new security measures are the answer though, far from it, if anything they are anti privacy and will make things worse should it get hacked which they can be.

On the subject of "misdirection", I was noticing several years ago that this was happening among the "Replies to your posts" notifications. I would check them up, and they would turn out to be replies to somebody else's post.
