I feel sad for Scotland; I think they deserved a better result.
At first, I felt the penalty should have been awarded, however, after examining the action, frame-by-frame, I’m not so sure. I’d say it was six of
one half a dozen of the other.
Here’s the sequence and why I think it may have been Armstrong at fault at the start of the run.
- Armstrong, in an awkward position, mistimes his run, missteps and starts to lose touch with the ball. As he does so, he pushes on Orban’s chest
who was almost alongside him.
- Orban, in return outstretches his arm to impede Armstrong... "Rubbin' in Racing"
- By that point, Armstrong realises he’s not going to get a shot on goal and grabs Orban’s shirt and pulls him down…
So, yes, Orban did impede Armstrong, but in retaliation for the Scot having done so first; and ultimately, Armstrong fouling Orban concluded with a no
penalty decision.
I’m not sure the referee could have seen that (unless he was looking up at the big screens), but I think the linesman would have had a better view
of the action and communicated it to the ref.
It’s one of those situations where the same incident could easily had led to a penalty, especially in domestic football matches.
The most important thing is that it looks like Varga will recover from that horrendous clash with Gunn.
