That may be true but the Ayatollah is in his late 80s, we really do not know in what kind of health he is, soo I am sure that it should be some protection to the next in line, his protege Raisi.

Iran is not as solid a country as they try to portrait, they have their own fair of escalating protest, women rights and tribal clashes.

Is a lot of people in Iran that rather have Raisi gone along with the aging Ayatollah, trying to find progress for the country.

The last thing we need is a young nuclear happy Ayatollah in power.

Understood. I was just blending the most likely cause with the propaganda narrative combined into one. Most likely cause being CFIT, and narrative being shot down.

While Raisi may be the likely heir to power, that is not the same thing as saying this is who the Ayatollah would pick. And, there seem to be conflicting reports about their relationship. Really, nothing is certain in Iran.

Here's a summary of what we know as of 30 minutes ago.

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged Iranians to "not worry" following reports of the helicopter crash, saying "there will be no disruption in the country's work"

The IRNA news agency reported that more than 40 rescue teams using search dogs and drones were sent to the crash site
Raisi was returning from an area near the Iran-Azerbaijan border, where he opened two dams with his Azeri counterpart Ilham Aliyev, before reports of an accident emerged

Aliyev said he was "profoundly troubled" after hearing news of the helicopter crash, adding that Azerbaijan was ready to offer any assistance needed

A US state department spokesperson said it was "closely following reports of a possible hard landing", but offered no further comment

Iran's interior minister said it will take "time to get to the location" of the crash site because of "bad weather conditions and fog in the area"

Wouldn't there have to be a transponder on board?

Latest news reports from ISNA (some Iranian source) say the exact location of the helicopter has been determined after signals were received from it (doesn't say what kind of 'signals') and also from a cell phone of one of the crew members. Crews are heading to the location (doesn't say how far they are from that location).

The other notable thing (I thought) is that the rain in the area is turning to snow. This would seem to indicate the crash site is at a pretty high elevation.

edit - There was no indication of the health of the rest of the crew or passengers during the call (nothing other than there was a call from one of the crew members). So, I guess it can be concluded that at least one person survived...IF that is even an accurate report.

It doesn't matter if he's in his 80s and bad health. He's still the real power in Iran, and if he were to kick it right now, and die of a heart attack the President still wouldn't be the power in the country. There's an entire council of Ayatollahs that hold power under Khamenei.

Interesting about the crew member's cell phone.
Did they just locate the phone?

Yes and no. Yes, the helo probably had a transponder. But...it may have been turned off, which is fairly common for diplomatic flights. If it wasn't destroyed in the crash, it could have been turned on at some point afterwards. With the proper equipment, a signal such as this could be located via triangulation. If the helicopter is equipped with ADSB gear it could be located by satellite, but again, it has to be turned on and operational for this to work.

Especially if any trauma related shock is involved.

No idea how far away the signal(s) were detected from where the search parties were, but looking at the geography of the area, it's some tough terrain to be sure without a lot of roads. Low visibility and fog pretty much rules out any aerial rescue by helicopter, so they'll have to get as close as they can by vehicle and then go on foot from there.

The "golden hour" has long since passed for anyone seriously injured.

Yep! Previous reports were erroneous. They still haven't found the crash site, and it is being reported as "unknown".

Crazy news from countries like Iran. You can never figure out what's really going on...even after everyone knows what's really going on, there's still all manner of nutty sh**.

So , what repercussions do you see here if the Old Guy just went to see his Boss Allah on the Other Side ? Will Iran become More Hostile or more Moderate on the World Stage ?

So a military helicopter has no survival gear flares etc. This makes me believe less likely people are just fine at the crash site
