The Pope is calling on the world to sign a global AI treaty with international regulations and obligations. He said unnamed "international organizations" can play a decisive role in the development of the treaty. First of all .. what the HELL is the Pope doing being involved in this? Freak'n globalist! He should be driving in his own lane. And second, AI is too new for everyone to jump on an international treaty with regulations and obligations. We don't know enough about it yet to be able to do that.

US senator tells Pope Francis to slow his roll on AI regulation

The United States is not ready to join a binding treaty proposed by Pope Francis to regulate artificial intelligence on a global scale, a top Senate Democrat says.

On Thursday, Pope Francis issued a dire warning to world leaders that uninhibited and reckless development of AI "may pose a risk to our survival and endanger our common home." In remarks made in honor of the upcoming 57th annual World Day of Peace, the pope urged world leaders to sign a global treaty to guide the development of AI for the betterment of humanity.

Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, told Politico in a statement that Congress has much more work to do on AI regulation before lawmakers can commit to a global treaty. "There is more work to do at the national level before we can establish global obligations and restrictions on the use of AI," Warner said in a statement.

Pope Francis has called for a legally binding international treaty to regulate artificial intelligence, saying algorithms must not be allowed to replace human values and warning of a "technological dictatorship" threatening human existence.

The pope made his call on Thursday in a message for the Roman Catholic Church's World Day of Peace, which is celebrated on Jan. 1. The title of the message, which is traditionally sent to world leaders and heads of institutions such as the United Nations, is "Artificial Intelligence and Peace". It came as governments around the world are seeking to balance the advantages of the technology, which can engage in human-like conversations, answer questions and write computer code, against the need to put guard rails in place.

"The global scale of artificial intelligence makes it clear that, alongside the responsibility of sovereign states to regulate its use internally, international organizations can play a decisive role in reaching multilateral agreements and coordinating their application and enforcement," Francis wrote in the message. "I urge the global community of nations to work together in order to adopt a binding international treaty that regulates the development and use of artificial intelligence in its many forms," the pope said.

let him go fondle Gretta Thundburg, leave the rest of the political stuff alone. He's supposed to be concerned with saving souls. If he wanted to be a politician, he picked the wrong job.

Since AI has the potential to blur the line between machine and human, computer program and soul, it behooves him to assert his expertise on the matter.

He has no expertise on the matter. AI doesn't have a soul.
And his 'expertise' in that area is questionable too .. but that's for another thread.
This is just a globalist grab for control. He is driving out of his lane.

They can sign all the treaties and make all the laws they want-but when true AI decides it wants to dominate humans-or shock horror maybe even spread the wealth outside the 0.1%-

NO laws will matter.

The cat is outta the bag anyway.
But this time the cat will decide what it wants.

And you won't have any way of knowing who the real cat is,
because no one regulated the use of AI,
and now everything could be a deepfake,
including everything you see on the news.

The idea that AI is going to be 'regulated' is laughable. Who's going to make the rules, and how will they be enforced? It's hilarious to see some of the biggest offenders in Big Tech claiming they're concerned about ethics and customer safety.
These are the people who flagrantly violate anti-trust laws, lie before congress, and screw their customers on a daily basis. Yes! We can trust them with AI.

And then the pope sticks his nose into it. Too funny. I'm sure Mark Zuckerberg, who has plowed $30 billion dollars into AI is going to follow the pope's rules.

Let's develop a good, Catholic AI.

Someone once said "It's reasonable to have some fear of Ai, but a much bigger fear should be: Who controls it?"
It was probably Elon Musk.

Having a discussion on something he did publicly isn't 'gatekeeping'.

This pope is a marxist and persecutes good Catholics, so his version of a good Catholic AI may not be all that good nor all that Catholic.

Who would enforce it?
How would they enforce it?

Strongly worded condemnations don’t count.

Is it a discussion, or is it a soapbox? I've seen too many topics like this.

I don't mean to be a pisser, but what if God gave AI a soul?

I can't see that ... a soul is the spark of the divine ...

Only people get souls, because humans are cosmically endowed unlike squirrels and calculators.

If it's not obvious, I'm being facetious about the fact that humans are expected to go to heaven and everything else is disposable whether it's technically alive or not.

Indeed. Hence my remarks about AI redefining the human identity and what it means to be alive, which is in the Pope's purview.

The real question is, why the administration and relevant pundits don't sit down and explore the concept of a treaty in case entities like "Sophia" becomes commonplace and develop their own community along with ideals for human-machine relations. Since we're apparently determined to reinvent the wheel, and by wheel I mean sentient life.

Men and women make babies all the time, it's God that adds that Divine Spark that gives us a soul. Without that, we're biological meat machines.

Why can't men and women make AI, and will God give it a Divine Spark?
