Currently state of emergency has been declared with two Kentucky towns, Livingston and Piney Branch, following a multiple-car train derailment. A CSX train, carrying hazardous chemicals has derailed, resulting in the evacuation of the mentioned towns. At least 15 train cars were involved in the accident including two sulfur dioxide cars that were breached. Causing the spillage of their contents from the wreckage. One member of the two-person crew was treated at the scene for minor injuries. Police are strongly encouraging residents to evacuate the area.

Breaking now.

Will post more as facts develop.

What are the harmful effects of SO2?
SO2 can affect both health and the environment.

What are the health effects of SO2?
Short-term exposures to SO2 can harm the human respiratory system and make breathing difficult. People with asthma, particularly children, are sensitive to these effects of SO2.

SO2 emissions that lead to high concentrations of SO2 in the air generally also lead to the formation of other sulfur oxides (SOx). SOx can react with other compounds in the atmosphere to form small particles. These particles contribute to particulate matter (PM) pollution. Small particles may penetrate deeply into the lungs and in sufficient quantity can contribute to health problems.

They work fast down there eh?

#UPDATE: Rockcastle County Middle School has set up approximately 100 cots, ready to serve as an overnight shelter for residents in the Livingston area who have been asked to evacuate due to a CSX hazards chemical spill from a train derailment.

Sulfur dioxide smells like rotten eggs. Very bad news. Back around the 60's there were studies tying sulfur dioxide to SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It is bad news for your breathing.

That's a few to many this year to be happen chance. Someone is doing this as an attack on us.

Another one... can't tell if these companies are just letting their trail rails deteriorate or someone is doing this on purpose.

We’ve always averaged just over one a day. They get more attention now due to social media.

Yes your own négligence.
being oh so concerned with policing the world while the only infrastructure that thrives is the MIC, well that might come back to bite...

You know, had kinfolk down in Pikeville Kentucky, n Logan West Virginia. Folks in hollers build within feet of the coal trains, winding thru. Really close, really slow, real deadly cargos.

Had 1st Responder training in Railroad disasters. Nasty. Bad. Death inducing. Trapped.

We have never secured our railroads. And they wind and crawl thru close quarter towns...because that's where we put the tracks.

We all are near some railroad...but don't realize the potential disaster risk. It's actually one of the worse in terrorism applications.

Happy Thanksgiving

Why are the distances to protect the area different during the night and day? Just curious dont know if anyone can answer.

During the day, turbulence caused by heating helps to disperse any cloud of chemicals. At night, as the ground cools the turbulence stops, so the cloud travels farther.

Oh that makes total sense. so this might be a silly question but is that atmospheric turbulence like what causes airplane problems? So is there less airplane turbulence at night then?

Sulphur Dioxide reacts with atmospheric oxygen and water forming sulfuric acid which if inhaled or on skin causes burns

That is hydrogen sulfide which paralyzes the breathing system, has a very low lethal concentration

Exactly. The air gets turbulent as it heats during the day. So planes encounter more turbulence in places during the day. As it cools, it starts to smooth out, so overnight flights are generally smoother.

Do they ever blame the engineer's for these derailments ? They fly through our town they just rated the tracks for something like 70mph and they do every bit of it if not more .

Tracks should have speed limit signs just like roads .

Buttigieg is the Secretary of Transportation in the US. He was recently in Ukraine as an advisor to help them rebuild their infrastructure; I guess that's why he doesn't have time to address all the pressing needs of the failing US infrastructure in America.
