It’s hard to change the code without access to the code. The existing staff doesn’t have access to change anything.

As for members we also have members that swear up and down they’re never coming back and are back five minutes later. And again and again and again.

He wants gmail because during one of the updates some email addresses were blocked out, so they’re not working. Gmail is working best for resets.

I was in IT for over 30 years. I know how to code. Of course I know that there are few with access to the code.

Depends on what kind of staff you meant. Moderation staff, nope, no code access. But sysadmin staff has plenty. Might only be one person/maybe only the owner, but 'staff' has access.

If that is the case with people in large numbers beating down the doors to get it that easily, why isn't it wild wild west here all the time, like it was last week?

I know people can work around the bans. Happens every day. I just dont believe it happens by the vast majority of people banned from ATS. At least not the intelligent, creative contributors that crossed a mod. People of that caliber often can't be bothered.

What's your point?

How is this connected to your false claim that opening up the source code would make the site safer?

Care to address any points I brought up in a non juvenile manner?

You claim opening up the source code would make the site safer...By all means, if you think this is such a good idea, start a thread and see what results you get from it. Do it.

An increase in membership non the less

More correctly, an increase above the normal increase, as membership increases daily.

Also there is a collecting of new emails from old members, a doubling effect. I’m sure emails have a $$$ to go with it.

How much is an email address valued?

Not just junk emails either, Jarum wants gmail addresses.

Really? I didn't see that mentioned. Could you point me to where Djarums asks for gmail addresses?

Thanks in advance.

That banner continues to flys like the Jolly Roger signalling that this ship is run by pirates.

As I said, only someone with access to the code can change that, and only admins have it, as far as I know.

The point is that we do not have access to the server! So even if we somehow got the source code, publish it as open source (what that poster wants) AND found a solution, we still can not upload it.

In the meantime, hackers can use that open source to spin up their own server with it and test hacking.

So yes, it IS insane. Do not let yourself be fooled by moved goal posts. As it is, it's an insane idea to defend.

Fullstop.

After that is done, I would put the old software on GitHub for everyone to enjoy or criticize! Any guesses what the forum is written in? Perl? PHP?

It's php, if you are unable to find out, you're not qualified to make educated arguments about the code at all.

Actually, a banner isnt code, its content, and as such, more more readily changed.

Do you realize how many people that get banned stick around? We have people that get banned multiple times and they still come back. A lot. Many of those were already here under different usernames. They decided to take a chance and ask for their old names back when they reset everything.

and this means what exactly for the average user here?

For the average user, very little. Simply pointing out that we have members that took a chance and got accounts back, and members that think this is the Hotel California.

Well…. they were banned for a reason.

Not entirely true. Most ad content is served as encoded data and rendered by the user's browser. It doesn't exist as content (an actual file) on the site-server.

I don't know though, between nefarious hackers ghosting us and an experiment or game, I lean towards the latter.

If it's a game though we're not the players. We're the played. Our agency in all this is so limited we don't even know what the game is or if indeed there is a game. Which make it sound, game or not, much like an experiment. But then, if it is an experiment at what point was a consent to participate sought? Is it somewhere in the small print? If our consent has not been sought then that limits the options as to who would conduct such unethical human experimentation.

Either of those options renders the membership mere toys.

I'm not really leaning in that direction but that could just be because that that's not my idea of fun.

People don’t get banned for “crossing a mod”. There’s a lot more to it that they aren’t going to tell, because it might make them look bad.

On the one hand, no, because I get why it was done, when it was done. It wasn’t a recent thing.

Here is whats weird and no Im not gonna recover my account since it was mine I already know it...

Anyways the weird or woo if you will a "burner account" to recover allows anyone to say so and so is them in that recovery process; More annoying is those still bible thumping and deleting posts that they disagree with aren't super moderators supposed to give those people the AXE?

When I make fun of it? It is to Deny Ignorance which is what the site motto IS... As far as I am concerned the 2nd resurrection of your lord "Jesus" was Viagra as who said "vengeance" ever needed to take human form?

Now here's the other problem hacked; Abandoned or whatever... The case may be? Going through the antonymous sever not a server server like Apache but the group known as that and they are many as they state cool fine whatever but Anarchist is the politics of that group if you don't know... Meaning hey the going through the route of here is my email? You're on a list... What bothers me most? As soon as I got a very rad version of XP called Black? IS when the white hat sorts started hacking me even though all support for XP was said to be abandoned by then. The thing as a DOS user/programmer pre MS purchase of it?That I hated more than anything was the first windows version yay graphical shell that took 1/2 hour to load... Second thing? That crap called GOdaddy that caused the first internet crash of domain buying and reserving.

I sorta beg to differ.

It is known.

Copy the offending comments and paste them into a PM when you moderate us then. That wouldn't require any kind of code change just cut/paste, viola. Transparency and openness.

Sure we don’t have their dashboard to see the trends, but I’d suspect things trending up.

Email list could get you a quick $500 or in this case if they are quality emails (gmail accounts) might have a higher value.
They also have more resources for data mining.

The gmail request came strait from DJarums In one of the many posts about how to recover your old account. I’d have to sort through to find it, but it’s there.

Zasphod verified it with his reply to my post.

One more thing on the emails
If I decides to get my old account then ATS would have 3 emails for me. One for my original account, one for this account and one quality email for the Djarum path to recovery.

I have nothing to hide but at this point it’s like one of those time share things where is it really worth it just for a $50 Chillies gift card.
