Hey all,
Long time lurker, 2011 or so. Lewiston is my hometown so I figured I’d say a few words. Not interested in arguing with anyone, just going to report
everything I was getting from friends and family who were very much in the midst of it last night. I was born in Lewiston, lived there from
‘82-‘03, my mother, sister, nephew, so many friends and family is up there.
The first text I got said there were 6 active shooters in various locations between Lewiston and Auburn. (They’re called the Twin Cities, they’re
connected by 2 main streets that run through each). I jumped on the police scanner right away and my lord, what a mess.
I’ve listened to a LOT of events in the last decade on the scanner, I have never heard false reports like this before. If there’s one conspiracy
to ponder, it’s why the f*ck the police were getting so many false reports. I can understand a small town of people getting shaken up and reporting
any suspicious activity, but they were getting calls like “2 active shooters at Walmart”, “2 actives shooters on livestream at Rusty Lantern in
Sabattus”, it was nonstop for about 3 hours until they finally found the guy’s car and then it mostly calmed down.
He ditched his car less than a mile from my mother’s apartment, who lives in Lisbon. I was on the phone with her as agents swarmed her parking lot
and the chopper circled above for the next hour or so before moving directly over my sister’s apartment where it was all repeated.
If this guy had any of this planned out, this will basically be like trying to find Rambo in the woods of Maine. The area he left his car has no light
pollution, there’s a stream at the boat launch that leads into the Androscoggin River and if he had a boat waiting, by the time the cops got there
he could have been long gone. He had the river to the south of him and the woods to the north.
The particular area he left his car in is all peaks, valleys and hills surrounded by the forest. Staying hidden there can be extremely easy. Hell, if
he got on a boat he can basically go to shore at any point and be in the woods where no one will find him.
All my family is accounted for, I still have 3 friends MIA, but it’s not unusual for them to go off the radar for a while. I cannot describe the
surreal feeling of seeing this go down from afar. Hearing these places talked about on the news, speculating about the people and the city. Every time
they pronounce something wrong on TV I want to scream at them the correct way to say it. FYI- it’s pronounced SHMEN-GEEZ, I know it’s spelled
Schemengees, that’s not how it’s pronounced. I played some of my first band gigs in that place. Spare Time is where we went bowling on high school
dates, we had our pre-prom party there.
While no city deserves this, this was akin to kicking a man while he’s been down for a century. Lewiston has experienced generational poverty since
the 1920’s, it’s always been a depressed city and fentanyl has ravaged it in the last several years. I honestly fear for the response to this over
the coming months, as the feeling of hopelessness is why I moved out 20 years ago and that feeling still remains there when I visit.
I don’t care about all the arguing, no one on this forum is going to fix this problem. I just want to go hug my family and friends.
I’m more than happy to answer any questions anyone has about the area. I’m not here to speculate on things, though. While I’m generally quite
stoic with emotions, this has me quite tripped up and I don’t even know when something is going to set me off. Craziest range of emotions I’ve
ever felt, specifically telling my mom, “Don’t worry, you’re surrounded by hundreds of armed officers….” as the chopper was above her
apartment and a potential shootout could break out at any point.
