What happened to Jim Jordan? Wasn't he running? I guess the Dems wont allow that to happen! Jeffries has been floated and I laugh. GOP majority should never put a democrat as speaker of house but in this day in age who knows. 220 GOP need to just vote. I like Jordan, he will get # done!

PROOF that House Leadership doesn't think being a member of Congress is important enough to be a Full-Time job.

ONLY 119 "work" days in 2023.

ON VACATION since September 30th, and won't return until October 17th. Less than a month after returning from a 43 day vacation!

All the gnashing of teeth over not having a "Speaker" is based on tradition, not based on NEED.

BTW..The GOP-led U.S. House have only scheduled 28 days of work, between October 17th and December 31st.

Wouldn't YOU like the make $200,000, have a Platinum benefit package, and only work for 119 days?

No wonder individual members never mention they are on vacation during interviews.

JIM JORDAN is now the #1 Choice for Speaker. He has re-entered the "race".

www.npr.org...

It's Jordan or Trump or Hakeem.

Jordan has even less support than Scalise. Neither has a path to the 217 votes needed.

I find the whole process fascinating, this how government works, things do not need to be rushed, in due time we will get a new speaker.

Hey bring Hillary, Obama or EOC, they will do a marvelous job.

We should all get paid so well to work such a relaxed schedule.

I place some of the blame for this mess on the Democrats. They seem content to just sit back and watch the Republican Representatives flounder against the dozen or so in that Party that seem intent on just burning it all down if they don't get their way.

The R's have 222 seats , the D's 213 seats. The needed votes to become the Speaker is 218.

The D's vote in block for their nominee, Jefferies
The R's cannot lose more than four from their majority to reach that threshold.

So, it all comes down to two possibilities. Six Republicans need to vote for Jefferies, OR the Democrats need to nominate someone to attract enough votes, say an established Republican or conservative, that would be acceptable to them as well as just a handful or so from the Republican Party to win the vote and sideline the radicals back to their peanut gallery.

While there are some in the GOP saying they need to start negotiating with the Dems, nobody has been willing to actually do it yet.

Why should it be on the Dems to fix the GOP's problems when the GOP have the majority? If they need the Dems' help then they need to ask for it and be willing to make concessions in exchange for their help.

That's one of the reasons they voted for McCarthy to be ousted. He never asked for their help, he merely expected them to come to his aid, but he offered them no reasons why they should help them.

This current monster is solely the creation of the GOP. And until they're willing to admit they need help slaying it, they will continue to battle it alone.

IMO, for the Democrats, it's Jeffries or bust. Truth be told, they don't trust the republicans to follow through on any promises, concessions or handshake deals to help elect another republican; as none of itis binding. If the D's stand strong, some R's will eventually flip; likely the ones in districts Biden won and/or swing districts leaning D in upcoming elections.

Super. I agree. Yet, the D's insistence on Jefferies is adament. Shouldn't they be at least making suggestions? Floating ideas that would give some members of the R's something to grab on to? A man lost at sea can wave all he wants but unless the crew of the ship at least tosses a line into the water for him to grab onto there is not much he can do but drown. Do the D's want the R's to drown? Do they want the entire House to to up in flames because of the pea nut gallery?

Literally.

That's just it though. The man lost at sea isn't waving. He's struggling to keep his head above water while stubbornly refusing to ask for help from the passing ship out of pure spite.

Pardon me all to hell and back:

Why can't the Dems negotiate with the Repubs?
Why can't there be more give an take?
More like in the days of Tip O'Neil....or do I remember that wrongly?

Jeffires isn't the answer any more than Gaetz would be.......in fact either would be worse than no Speaker at all.

Because the republicans hold the "majority". It is within their ability to elect a new speaker without Democrats help. If they need Dems to help them, then they should approach the Dems with hat in hand, concessions at the ready, to get it done. The Dems don't owe them a goddamn thing and aren't responsible for cleaning up republican created messes.

Jeffries might not be ths answer, but neither is Scalies, Jordan or P01135809. Holding the majority, the republicans must get serious about governing if they want the Dems to take them seriously.

P01135809???? Which state is he from?

Seriously though....
I don't really care who is in the majority.
Both sides need to meet more in the middle.
To work TOGETHER for the good of the CITIZENS of the USA.
Less US versus THEM and more WE THE PEOPLE!!!!!

And my caps are not screaming

The GOP needs to give some indication they're willing to work together. Pretty much every desk they stuck with McCarthy he stabbed them in the back to placate the more extreme members of their party.

So pardon the Dems for not wanting to work with people that continuously go back on their word. If the GOP wants the Dems to work with them then they need to show they've changed and are willing to abide by their word.

I agree both sides are in the wrong.
This polarization is killing the Republic.

We also need to curtail all the pork and crap stuck into bills to get the needed votes.
So much of the crap/pork undermines the USA and its Citizens.

Jordan is the GOP's candidate for Speaker with 124 votes. Austin Scott, who did no campaigning and threw his name in the ring minutes before the vote got 81.

The Republicans are going home for the weekend since Jordan clearly wouldn't make it past a floor vote. Looks like it's back to the drawing board for the GOP.
