"Plus I have moral issues taking a fish that's managed to evade being caught for 20+ years..."
That's good to hear!
The carp I fish for are much older.
They get caught but we look after them.
Mind you, there are a few that are seen but never get to visit the bank to have their photos taken.
I hear you on this. About 35 or so years ago I got a big bite on the Grand River outside Lansing, Michigan. The fight lasted over and hour and
me and my fishing buddy traded off and on through the whole ordeal, it happened almost day break and be been on the side of the bank catching an
assortment of fish all night, even caught an unusual red horse Sucker.
After we finally tired this old fish out we finally banked it ashore. It was a 50 plus # old Flathead at least. At that time we did not have a scale
that could weigh anything over 25# So we estimated it at 50+ lbs. It's girth was huge and also it's length. This was a Flathead cat. Thing I remember
most is the 'fist' measurement. How many human fist's fit the width of the mouth, side by side end to end. Well we had it over 10 fists. While we was
un hooking the huge fish a black man came running at us wanting to keep the old great grandad cat. I think he might have been a bum? I can't imagine
anyone and I mean anyone wanting to eat that fish? We let it go safely and it swam away calm, just like it's been through many times before. The black
dude seems disgruntled about us letting it go, so that was our que and we packed up and left, it was past daybreak anyway and we went to a Denny's and
had the big breakfast. Later we crashed at one of our girlfriends house, I don't remember which one? We called ourselves 'The lady killers' at one
point back then we had so many girlfriends.
What a night.
