Fisherman logic - Update

I wrote a thread yesterday about catfish bait I was going to try, since the regular stuff I use just wasn't working.

The fish are feeding on mussels and just Will Not bite on anything I normally use, so I took minced clams and the juice, added it to chicken breast, let it sit in the fridge overnight and went fishing this morning.

It works. HOLY JEEEZ does it work.

Went to the same spot I had no luck in the day before and got there about 6:45. Baited my lines, cast out and sat down on my bucket. I did not have to wait long. By 7:15 I had a 15 lb on the stringer . Then at 7:25 my wife called on her way home from work. As I was talking to her, I got a hit and reeled in an 18 lb. I had my phone on speaker, so after I got that one on the stringer, I re baited, cast out and while I was still talking to her, got hit again and reeled in a 16 lb. They HAMMERED that bait.

I caught 6 in a 90 minute period, all 15 lbs or better.

I kept the 15 and 18 and gave one of them to my neighbor when I got home.

Going again in the morning. Won't keep any, but it's fun to catch'em.

I tried to upload pics, but it's being fussy and I'm not gonna fight with it.

How do you like to prepare your catfish? Do you fry or sauté?

I’m also curious what percentage of meat one yields.

Fine corn meal mixed with Tony Chachere's Creole seasoning and then deep fry. You will get at least half the total body weight in edible meat.

Here we have Wels catfish that can go over 100lbs. On the Continent, way bigger.

Squid is good, also liver. Then big Halibut pellets? The ones used to feed Halibut in fish farms.

Glad it worked out for you today, those are some nice cat's. Did you happen to compare the barometric pressure between today and yesterday. I used to keep notes this way when I used to be fanatical about fishing just about everyday. I'm older now and do not have the energy like I used to.

nice work. I really like catfish nuggets. Cut a fillet into chunks and deep fry with some breading. Serve with sweet potato French fries and copious amounts of beer.

I should add, we put them back and don't eat them.

My mate had one at 46lb. Took him all around the lake.

We call them giant tadpoles.

They eat ducks.

We had a cold front roll through late last night/early morning. Water temps are finally starting to drop, so I'd say that helped.

Try replacing the cornmeal with panco, then deep fry in beef tallow... you might be pleasantly surprised.

ETA: the only reason I replied to this is catfish is, to me, the absolute tastiest of fish, I love the stuff, and when you deep fry in beef tallow with panco for the 'breading', it is carnivore friendly, even if you do use a little bit of seasoning.

I very much doubt water temp change at all overnight, water don't work that way. The reason I mentioned barometric pressure above, that would certainty change if a cold front came in.

This is very true. Even during scorching heat, the lower layers can still be v cold.

Nice fish. I wonder how catfish would taste smoked. I know smoked suckers are good, so maybe catfish would be the Cat's meow.

Nice blues there.

Personally I've caught more catfish off chicken titties(chicken and strawberry jello) than any other catfish bait ever. Especially during mid-late summer. The pectin in the jello that's made from hooves is an excellent fish attractant.

I always bait one rod with it and it always gets more action than the other rods combined. It might not catch the biggest cats but I feel if you're looking for food you generally don't want to target the biggest cats. Not the best eating.

Plus I have moral issues taking a fish that's managed to evade being caught for 20+ years...

That's good to hear!

The carp I fish for are much older.

They get caught but we look after them.

Mind you, there are a few that are seen but never get to visit the bank to have their photos taken.
