Angry and frustrated, McCarthy challenges right-flank colleagues to try to oust him from his post

Angry, frustrated and unable to lead a fractured and unruly Republican majority, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Thursday told the colleagues threatening to oust him: Do it.

The embattled Republican leader essentially dared his hard-right flank to quit holding the risk of a vote to remove him from the job.

If you’re going to do it, go ahead and try, McCarthy told the Republicans behind closed doors.

“File the f——- motion,” McCarthy said, using a profanity for emphasis, according to those in the private meeting.

Nine days to government shutdown and the House has no ideas, no plan, no measures and no funding in place. Nothing. The majority is bickering over how to impeach Biden and blackmailing McCarthy with his removal unless he acquiesces to their demands. Impeachment or the government collapses.

The issue is McCarthy has not had the votes to authorize the impeachment inquiry and many of the moderate Republicans don't want to go on the record with their vote. But McCarthy made a deal with the Freedom Caucus that a single member of the House could file a motion to vacate his seat. He had to do this in order to secure his seat on the 15th vote for his position. He made insane concessions no leader should make and now he is in a position where things that don't seem attainable are being used as leverage over American economy and safety.

With a government shutdown looming, McCarthy is confronting the same stubborn problem that has driven Republicans before him from the speaker’s job — trying to lead a ruptured GOP majority that’s split between what’s left of the traditional party and a harder-right element largely allied with former President Donald Trump.

Even his decision to launch an impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden did little this week to appease the demands of the Freedom Caucus and others as they threaten to shut down the government in pursuit of deep spending cuts or move to a motion to oust him from office.

“I showed frustration in here because I am frustrated with some people in the conference,” McCarthy said after the meeting in the Capitol basement as lawmakers were wrapping up for the week.

“But when we come back, we’re going to get this done. Nobody wins in a government shutdown.”

There won't be a shutdown. No one has to worry. The President of the US has a constitutional duty to preserve the American way of life and to keep the government funded and functioning. If the House ceases to function, and the President has to invent a stopgap measure to prevent a collapse, there is no doubt the SC would find it a constitutional duty of the President. American way of life is paramount.

Let's say that in some horrible attack the Congress gets wiped out, and no legislators are left to continue the work of funding the government among other things. The President could step in and fund the government through executive orders until the Congress is reestablished. That is the President's ultimate duty, to keep everything going and preserve our way of life.

This is the same, if the House ceases to do their job, another branch would fill in and protect the American way of life, our jobs, our houses and our pension funds.

Doesn't make it any easier on McCarthy. Passing this bill and this funding is one of his main duties. If he doesn't figure out how to do it in the next 9 days with immediate and wide support... well, it won't look good, and that's putting it gently.

Pretty simple question to determine.

Does the POTUS have the authority to fund the government?

Spoiler Alert

A continuing resolution has been brought forward many times in the past. It keeps the govt running. Essentials only. That's why the 'shut downs' have been gamed in the past to basically closing national parks and monuments.

Yup.

Not this Supreme Court.
Maybe in alternate reality Hell-World where the democrats cheated enough to get Clinton in office.

Let's be real here...the spending, funding, appropriations, etc., anything that has to do with monetary policy has already been drafted. It's then given over to Congress in order for them to add their pork, projects and donor promises. It's the media and Congress's job to create controversy, opposition and doubt as if there are actual sides "fighting for you". That way when it passes, because it absolutely will, those opposed will feel defeated but at least your reps tried right?

"We'll get em next year..." just like Peewee football coaches assure their 8 year old players when they lose. Participation trophies as a consolation anyone? No?
🤷🏻

Republicans like to fight amongst themselves it makes it difficult for them to show a united front and further their agenda.

Democrats are almost militant in holding their rank and file in line; it does help them further their agenda but it walks them down a fascist/totalitarian path.

I don't know which is better or worse.

your right in that he can't order the tressuray to start scratching readers to everybody, but if i'm not mistaken all the president can do is shift funds that are there from one agency to another to accomplish a goal and from the contingency funds through EO's. trump did it twice once from the pentagon to build the wall, and covid relief.

sometimes it flies sometimes it doesn't.

Trumps wall was rejected and the gov't shutdown over it. When it reopened, the wall funding wasn't there when trump signed the bill.

Then, he declared an emergency on the border for the funds which was contentious.

How funny that you guys are so supportive and protective of McCarthy since he’s basically against all the conservatives. If he starts actually working with them you’ll hate his guts and hope he dies.
I wonder what it feels like to be, and think, like that.

Back when the government functioned, dissenters hanged.

I guess it's been some 120 years since then.

A Perfect Solution for this Dilemma is McCarthy the RHINO Stooge Steps Down as Speaker and Matt Getz takes his Place .

You have a lot of faith in a president who $hits his pants and forgets where he is.

The last thing I would hope for if the house can’t get their crap together is Joe stepping in.

Essential functions of the Federal Government have never shut down. The 80% that's not needed begged Congress to reopen them after 6 weeks, when complaining about the government shutdown ended and the country kept running as normal.

If we’re playing the long game, there’s your plan A.

Gaetz may be a little flaky, but like Trump he’s gettin’ some schite done.

You raise a good point,
As a tax paying citizen with a wage slightly above the average tax payer, I've seen the government "shut down" a few times and I've never once missed them.

Who do they work for?

They're not helping the people that pay them. They wouldn't exist if they weren't getting paid.

This isn't hard math. Maybe they should get real jobs...
