Extinction Rebellion have sabotaged several golf courses throughout Spain in a coordinated demonstration to denounce the amount of water they claim the 'elitest leisure' activity uses to maintain its grounds.

It comes amid a drought in the country that has lasted since January, and according to Reuters, has also seen seen areas in the southwest region of Spain record temperatures of over 44ºc.

The climate activists posted a video on Sunday on Twitter, showing members of their group vandalising several golf courses in Madrid, Barcelona, Navarra and Ibiza, digging up greens, embedding carrots in the upturned turf while also filling holes with cement.

well, I'm glad they're nonviolent (so far)

but this is still vandalism and criminal.

not that many people are going to sympathize with golf courses, I think.

I had never heard of 'Extinction Rebellion'

They'd better dig water retention on slopes, that would actually contribute to a solution...
But I'm not mourning the golf courses either

This is stupid.
Dig some holes, pour some concrete and basically try to ruin the greens.

Ya know what they'll do ? They'll fix all that and use even more water to do it.

"Activists" is just code for someone who can't come up with a solution, so they destroys things. Like a child throwing a tantrum.

You're right. They should spray paint the greens pink.

When they are the only green patches left in your neighborhood, I'm sure you'll figure it out...

They are great for sleeping guerilla style in urban areas, have to give them that...

I am not rich. I golf every day I can. My daughter went Father's Day with me, and she goes 1 or 2 times a week with me.

I don't have money. I joined a 9 hole course for $500 and can walk free. Great exercise.

June 30 , I played 27 holes. The course does not irrigate, so the ground was hard, and the grass brown.

I no longer play golf but I used to quite a lot - and I'm not rich by any stretch of the imagination, just a normal regular guy from a council estate in a town in North East England.
Lots of my friends still play golf.

I've been on three golfing holidays to Spain with mates, always had a great time and met lots of wonderful people.
Golf tourism brings a huge amount of revenue into Spain's economy and provides many jobs in many areas that are otherwise lacking any real sort of investment.

Many of these areas wouldn't be much better than a third world country if it wasn't for tourism of which golf plays a large part.

Extinction Rebellion - just like the Just Stop Oil tossers - are largely entitled upper-middle class morons intent on spoiling many of the few enjoyments normal, everyday people have in order to impose their self-righteousness on everybody else.
They certainly have no interest or concern for the hard working people who rely on golf tourism for a livelihood.

Knobheads each and every one of them.

Yeah like that old Indian chief "great feathered putter" said, when the last river is dried up, the last tree fell, and all the crops are dry, while the sacred golfe course is lush and green you'll realize that you can't eat golf balls... Or something to that effect...

Seems like the Sahara dessert is hungry... Not much you can do, unless you have huge oil reserves...

Pretty sure watering a golf course when public fountains are dry and peoples home tap get rationed, wouldn't sit well with you either. I guess digging holes in golf course has a bigger reach than typing on a discussion board.

If you're south enough you might even get a taste of it for yourself, you'll let me know then how sweet that green golf course is...

If no-one's got any jobs and money because all the golf courses are shut and no tourists are visiting I'm sure all those local Spaniards will be happy.

And bear in mind; no-one drinks tap water in these areas, its bottled water only. Something else they won't be able to buy without any income.

As I said, many of these communities are almost 100% reliant on tourism of which golf is a large part.

you have to whack a ball with a crocked stick, the hole is hundreds of yards away. to much sh@@ in the way, you lose your ball and and have to whackin away with a tire iron and every time you miss your gonna feel like your having a stroke. at the end of those hundreds of yards there's a flat spot with a little flag in the hole to give you hope, there's also a pool and a beach on either side to --ck with your ball, and you do that 18 times.

warning language,

robin williams golf

Harbor Shores is just down the street and before a SPGA tournament a few years ago someone cut down 27 trees and did a lot of other damage. It was all fixed before the tournament and not a word was said. Afterwards a reward was put out and they were caught. Over $10ok in damage got them 4 years in prison.

They need water not your stinking money.

It's rather telling when water ranges lower than money on a necessity list.
Hopefully nature will set things straight...

That's true. I think we should encourage the rich people to build underground golf courses so the rest of us don't have to look at them wallowing in their wealth and privilege on golf courses.

I agree they need water.
And there's plenty of other things people/governments/industry both could and should do to ensure there is adequate water for everyone.
I'm not disputing that.

Shutting golf courses and depriving people of a source of income isn't the best way to do that, not by any stretch.
There are far more efficient and effective ways to do so.....but hey, let's not get in the way of the entitled upper-middle class narrative .

Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil are pretentious morons - just like many of these woke driven movements - who are more concerned with projecting an image and being seen as 'rebellious' rather than doing anything constructive about issues.
I suspect very few of these people have ever been to the areas affected and discussed the issue with those involved, the people who's lives are directly impacted.

The world faces many problems and I'm not naive enough to suggest anything other, but empty gestures like this achieve nothing positive at all.

An extra 500$ and the leisure time to enjoy it golfing 1/2 times every week seems like wealth to me.

NO thats cheap considering how much a regular game cost non members. Augusta national will run you 40,000 deposit and couple thousand each year in dues to stay.

These Muppets went from ER to Insulate Britain and now Just Stop Oil:

www.bbc.com...

Total tw@ts.

"Just Stop Oil is an environmental activist group founded after Extinction Rebellion and Insulate Britain, with organisers from both at the helm.

The movement first came to attention following a series of protests in March 2022. This included pitch invasions at several Premier League football grounds.

There have been other notable protests since then, including disruption at oil terminals and on some of the country's busiest motorways. It has also targeted major sporting events."
