Inane paranoid nonsense as usual. This is an incredible feat of science and bioengineering. It could change the world. And yet here are the usual "gub'mint gon inject it with vaxeens" crowd. Lord give me strength.

It is an incredible feat of science and no one is being forced to eat it. There is a lot of positive potential. A world without factory farms would be amazing.

There is so much wrong with the meat industry, including ad-gag laws that penalize whistleblowers and hide the vast cruelties of animal production. We should be pushing this tech foward and perfecting it to make it as healthy as possible, and able to mass produce.

The people who criticize "fake meat" should take a look at real meat; the additives, cruelty, influence over politicians and industry funded studies, and the negative health impacts. This has a future potential of ridding ourselves of that.

I don't see why people are already against it.

What is the difference between meat grown in a egg or animal womb versus a lab? Why would be worse than the other?

I will definitely prefer "real" meat, but this could be an option to maintain food sustainability, and perhaps even provide an option to individuals with limited means to have greater access to protein.
One is frankenfood , the other real food. I know which one I would prefer.

What if multiple peer-reviewed studies were done showing no negative health effects of lab-grown meat? If it can be shown healthy, then what reason is there to not try it?

I used to work in a meat plant. specifically chickens. we would shock them to stun them, them the catchers quickly snap their necks. They dont even register it its so fast. Now Cows and pigs i think they should use CO2 and just lull them off to sleep/death.

There's a lot of slaughterhouses where the animals suffer a lot. And that's just the slaughterhouse, many times animals live a terrible life condensed together and in constant stress.

There is no justification for it, especially with plenty of vegan options and soon we'll have fake meat.

People just don't want to admit that they support this cruelty purely for their tastebuds. It's quite sad.

No wonder aliens don't want to reveal themselves to us. How can you respect human beings if we treat lower lifeforms and nature as something to be used up without mercy? We give no consideration and compassion to less intelligent species, why should ETs that are more intelligent than us show us any respect and compassion?

I think in most cases malevolence takes a back seat to good old-fashioned greed.

Well in this case you’re in luck. Lab-grown meat is in very early days, is hugely inefficient, consumes massive amounts of resources and does not yet pose a viable alternative to existing methods. Purely a research endeavour.

I agree that Monsanto sucks though.

The difference is the lab grown meat is essentially a tumour.

Vegan options? Vegan isn’t an option it’s an argument for compulsory sterilisation.

The science (and technology) used to grow meat in the lab does not seem to be all that different (excepting for scale) as that employed to grow replacement skin for burn patient grafts. In fact, the skin grafts for burn patients, as I understand, currently utilize a bio-neutral synthetic matrix as an implantation bed to which the skin cells can anchor.

So should we "trust the science" to help heal the unfortunate when they are at their most vulnerable, but distrust it when the dinner bell rings and filet is on the menu?

Go ahead and eat all you want. I know how they set the parameters of what they search for at the FDA. They do not require testing of anything they do not suspect will poison you within a certain amount of time at a portion size they denote as normal. So go ahead, it is your right to eat what you want and trust the interpretations of evidence you want to believe.

Quite a bit.
Almost like the thought of eating a food that previously caused food poisoning.

a reply to: DontTreadOnMeI tried some of that plant based meat...I thought it sucked. I would rather eat veggies than to have them turn them into something that resembles a burger but has no taste. Those plant based burgers don't even taste like a good cooked veggie, give them a lab and plenty of cash and they will screw everything up.

There is no way in hell I will ever lie and say a plant based burger is good, and I will not lie if I taste a fake lab made meat if it tastes like crap. I don't even like the taste of new commercial beef these days, if you don't add a lot of salt and spices it has little beef taste at all. Seems they are more interested in making meat tenderer and more unnatural than they are in making it taste like real meat these days.

As a meat eater I think this is great. I can't stand the cruelty of factory farmed animals. If I was rich I would be a vegetarian for sure.
Well that's not true. If I was rich I would have farm animals on my own land that I would treat with dignity before I ate them.

If anything the lab meat is better. No need to pump the animals full of chemicals , steroids, and antibiotics.

Don't see why, it seems like they are going to make it the same way beer is made, a microorganism takes something, like sugar, and turns it something I would like to ingest.

If they can find a way to make it look, taste and feel like meat and get me drunk [insert take my money meme here].

I have my concerns about lab meat, but it may have some safety features that make it less dangerous than real meat in some respects, such as being prion-free, i.e. no mad-cow disease -- or maybe not.

Cheese is essentially lab made, fermented in a tub or tank.

So instead of letting wild animals live together with the farm animals (deer, squirrels, rabbits, etc..) they are going to wipe out all animals in huge fields to plant for growing sugar? Sugar being the food for the goo.

From what I understand, for now, this is only fake chicken. I propose we call it faken for convenience. That is until they approve faef, fark and fash, (fake beef, fake pork and fake fish).
