WASHINGTON — Newly appointed special counsel Robert Hur is an “establishment Republican” who will lead a Justice Department inquiry into President Biden’s handling of classified documents after the revelation that Biden stored records next to his Corvette at his Delaware home’s garage — presenting a potentially long-running headache for the White House.
It’s illegal to mishandle classified information and the revelation that Biden stashed sensitive records at his Wilmington home follows the public disclosure Monday that 10 documents, some labeled “top secret,” were found at a Washington office space the 80-year-old used after his vice presidency.
Hur, 49, was nominated to be US attorney for Maryland in November 2017 by former President Donald Trump. He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate the following March and took office on April 9, 2018.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) asked the Department of Justice on Tuesday to provide an unredacted copy of the memorandum detailing the scope of special counsel Robert Hur’s investigation into President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents.
Jordan, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, asked Attorney General Merrick Garland for the memo in a letter obtained by Breitbart News, adding that he was also seeking “any other document describing, listing, or delineating the authority and jurisdiction of the special counsel.”
Jordan asked that Garland provide both memoranda by June 20.

On Jan. 4, federal agents interviewed Chung while working with an investigative team led by U.S. Attorney John Lausch, who was tasked to conduct a preliminary probe of the security breach.
Alarmed by what his investigators reported back to him about Chung's role in the possible illegal removal and retention of state secrets, Lausch urged Attorney General Merrick Garland to appoint a special counsel.
The following day Garland complied, naming veteran federal prosecutor Robert K. Hur to take over the criminal case as special counsel.
Hur's office reportedly has obtained more than 100 pages of documents from Chung, including emails and text messages.
In interviews with Real Clear Investigations, they insisted that Biden's document scandal is potentially more serious than just mishandling state secrets. They suspect it could mushroom into a counterespionage case involving China and national security.
Chung’s dual role – as an aide to Joe Biden when he was vice president and a friend of Hunter Biden, who emails show received sensitive information from Chung from his father’s office – further highlights the murky ethics that exist between the Biden family’s public service and business interests.

The special counsel investigating the classified documents kept by President Joe Biden could face pressure to act after last week’s indictment of former President Donald Trump, according to a government watchdog group.
Robert Hur, a former Trump-appointed U.S. attorney in Maryland, was appointed special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland in January amid revelations that Biden had stored classified information from his time as vice president and in the Senate at his private homes and offices.
“There will be pressure on the special counsel Hur to resolve what is going on with Biden’s documents, even if it’s to say Biden cooperated with the investigation, which would be tongue-in-cheek considering how information about the [president’s] possession of documents came out in dribs and drabs,” Paul Kamenar, counsel for the National Legal and Policy Center, a conservative government watchdog group, told The Daily Signal.
He did just need to say he was not aware they were in his possession. Careless? Yes. But without intent nothing illegal was done. Trump on the other hand was out there Tuesday night after his arraignment confessing his intent on national television.
