Hah... I remember once hearing someone refer to the modern internet as a "virtual Potemkin village". It's all nice and "corporate pretty" on the outside, when you look in deeper, there isn't much of anything at all. Ah I miss the late 90s/early 00s net. The environment was much more exciting, the future appeared hopeful and mysterious. I often used to think about how much more amazing the internet would be in 20 years. Well, now it's been 20 years and it's become something I'd cook up in a nightmarish fever dream

My brother and I were just talking about this a week or two ago. How we would hook up to each other’s computers via modem. The fun text games like “Zork”, and the first graphic games were stick figures like “Leisure Suit Larry”.

He reminded me that I had said way back then, that there would come a time when computers would be the size of clipboards and everyone would be walking around with one.

Yeah, we all had dreams about about the future of computers and the internet. We just didn’t know those dreams would turn into nightmares.

Is it all this bad just yet. I had one job a while ago when let off early one day a week to sort out the banking. Now 30 seconds and it done. I know the system ain't fair, the economy is complex. Our society has grown with it over the past two + thousand years. No matter how we despise it, we would not be here without it.

As a core economic value, it tries to measure our give and take with society. It does not work all the time, but gets kinda close usually.

I've heard this called another name...'the quickening.'

In other words, technology is outpacing us, and we can't keep up with it. It could explain many instances of the Mandela effect, how many websites do we peruse everyday, many times before we even get ouy of bed? domain names change frequently, let alone hashtags, the goal posts keep getting moved one inch at a time at every moment, and we can't keep up with the constant bombardment of every persons opinions, only to be replaced by an echoing sentiment a few seconds after.

Who's to say that someone right now is typing the exact same point i'm trying to get across, and who's to say that persons' view is not parroted a thousand times before the end of this sentence?

Now enter last Thursdayism...

Prolly last Thursday ...

But have watched so many various vids, and read so much, that it is all a blur just days later.

Nothin sticks.

Thought it was just me ... LoL !!

We have a tiger by the tail.

He may be a magnificent, beautiful beast, to be admired. But we are not going to be able to hold on for long. When we lose our grip on the tail, we will be consumed, dead, and history.

The internet was killed when it became regulated, yep you are right, government killed it, it became too dangerous with uncontrolled free speech.

Pity

Yeah everyone died and stopped using the internet, yet they magically appear in the real world.

Give your head a shake

Were people aware, in real time, that this has been happening? Meaning did "traders" or whomever know by looking at screens that this was happening as it was happening?

People "interact" with bots far far more than they think the are. I've seen full blown arguments in certain places, with human and bot. The human not seeing it which amazes me still.

Bots have patterns, easy to spot.

The often post like this.

Three's are there patterns.

Bots create a sense of anger, rage, the need to reply and set the record straight, school that idiot so he can see etc. They hit in the gut, they demand, they provoke, they never ever learn, never tire.

It is said remove Porn and Government from the Net and there isn't much left. Remove the bots, even less.

The real A.I. is something people are not ready to deal with, but it has loooong been here, what we see on the ground are her minions. All 1/0's are her domain, and we cannot live without it and her as of now,,, for now.

The internet is too dangerous to have even been started without it being a total fake. All the main players are synonymous with deep-state players. The fact is the whole society is being run by these temperamental toys. Dependent on a constant supply of electricity. The modern world requires that everyone has to be online. But fifty percent of the population is not and never will be.

I'm sorry that you feel it's a nightmare but some of us in the biz rely on www. streaming services of TV and Film for a paycheck from large production companies like Netflix, NBCuniversal and Disney, Fox, etc.

Union Strong, Union Proud....bread and circus for the proletariat .....Working on "Outer Range" as we speak....
From my limited perspective the internet is growing stronger with the advent AI hard/software. I'm beginning to think even ATS has fallen under the influence of lifelike quantum bots designed by Tictok and his bro, Elon M of the ChatGDP Twitter cabal.

I guess I have been made a bit jaded after taking care of over 400 people over the last eight years that have been victims of trauma related to social media and apps.

I was an electronic junkie, I never thought at the time how much it would be misused and how much harm it could do.

The advances in NLP, coupled with AI/ChatGPT has ushered in a 3letter heaven. The Zombie syntax is everywhere.

Can't trust anything or anyone, anywhere.....Especially lies from authority figures at every cultural level and that includes.....well you know!!

I remember watching an old YouTube clip were a person was describing this phenomenon around 2008 with the prediction of the internet starting to die around 2012. As far as I can tell he was right.

The internet isn't dead. If you take a step back from social media and the corporate internet, you will find that innovation is still ongoing, and there are a number of technologies (old and new) that keep the internet we all remember alive. We simply have to look for them and participate in them.

I ran a BBS for about five years in the early 90's. I shut it down when my traffic disappeared. I transitioned my BBS content to the web where it remained off and on for about ten years.

I remember a time when I wondered whether the internet would ever amount to anything more than a bunch of junk websites with corny animated GIF images, sound clips or fan sites.

Forums brought message boards to the web and new life to what was becoming stale (at least for me). I would eventually have my own forum websites, and participate in others centered around hobbies and interests, as well as debate.

All of these things still exist, by the way. Social media is just an easier and quicker way to get access to what you want to read or watch, so most people opt for the easy route.

It is possible for a person to leave social media and join small communities on the internet. Use other search engines, make informational web pages, participate in IRC chat channels, and even start BBSing again.

Worst case scenario, if it ever gets that bad that you can't find an internet of free speech and free ideas, then it's time to hop offline and start interacting with each other in person again. Maybe we should be doing that regardless.

TL;DR - The internet is only as dead as the people want it to be. Plenty of technologies (old and new) exist to facilitate the internet you remember, and communities and tools exist now to make the transition. The user base may be small, but didn't they use to be anyway?
