ATS and Keeping Polite Company...

Umm...I'll just drop this complete abject self plagiarization...from earlier today...

Speaking generally...not specifically...

My observation is that this question of non-perfect...sanitized...artificial dialogue...is just not compatible with how life in the for reals works...

My further take is that there are WAY too many snowflakes whose feels get damaged beyond reason because someone said something...somewhere...

I happen to approach life and ATS from the perspective that it at least reflect some of that for real conversation...and not some robotic answer to query...

In the for reals...when I'm conversing with friends...family...or with the general public...there's always banter...some teasing...jokes...humor...Even and especially in serious conversation...

It's like Yesterday in a thread...someone made the comment that other posters in the thread hate the Brits...that post got some star like...However...Who actually hates the British on this site...?

No one...However...banter is misconstrued as Hate...because...feelz...

That's what's corrupted the site...the irrational search for offense...where none was present...the melting snowflake syndrome that's inculcated the entirety of public discourse...

So...the answer seems to be..."see something...say something"...guard your tongue lest an offense seeker has a meltdown...guard those sacrosanct safe spaces cause lets face it...I'm going to tattle to the mods if you scratch my feels... Personally...I thought we were all adults here...and adults do humor...don't always agree...quip and quibble...use sarcasm...and occasionally vent frustration with intransigence...

The other side of the coin is that...in case you hadn't noticed...the world...the world over...is rapidly turning into a huge pile of stinking feces...it's rapidly circling the drain and is being pulled inexorably into the event horizon...

So cut some slack...don't expect perfection where none is evident...and lighten the hell up...

To me, politics and religion are kind of like the "instant reputation" topics you mentioned also. If you are a certain religion or political party or ideology and tell certain people that, those people tend to make sometimes wild assumptions and/or accusations about you. Like if you tell someone you believe in Bigfoot or aliens. Some also believe and will support you, others think you're nuts. If you tell someone you're a Christian they assume you're some right wing republican. If you tell someone you're a liberal or republican you get stereotyped based on that also.

Not everyone stereotypes people like that, I know but I think it's kind of the same thing. I don't go around telling people I think project blue beam is happening the same way I don't tell people what religion I am.

I get what your saying. It does seem at times that people interpret and internalize what they 'expect' in exchanges.

Sometimes claiming offense, can be 'used,' in and of itself, as an act of offense.

Sometimes the claim of being "offended' can be weaponized.

It doesn't stand up well outside of "post and run" in our corner of the discussion world, and soundbite world on video.

That's just another reason why I like it here... if all you say to someone is, "you suck!' that doesn't count as a discussion.

Be careful plagiarizing from YouSIr... I hear he can get real mean!

It's very true... tell someone about your religion and they automatically enter the "wiki" in their mind and carry all that baggage into your world... Telling someone that you think UFOs are alien technology and some will say cool, others will look at you like your missing a chromosome.

But I suppose even I carry that habit into my life too. So I guess it is an element of the human condition I just have to keep an eye on... since I lack the enlightenment to be a perfect person.

I suppose one can rationalize the need for an 'alternate' 'anonymous' identity in many ways... I just haven't found a reason to accept that it should ever 'be' necessary... it seems like a surrender to me.

But I don't judge, and the moderator in me reminds members that practice is not really acceptable here at ATS... because it shouldn't ever be necessary and expresses misdirection and dishonesty.

I have to laugh.

I got that same response, not sure from which mod. It was a long while back. I don’t think my skin ever got that much thicker, but I too opted for the log out button, finding it be a much better and easier way to deal with it.

You had a better chance of beating King Kong than fighting a tall, skinny, crazy, girl, that had no fear of getting her ass beat by some funky little boy.

As a kid I never started a fight and I never lost one. And no, I did not have an issue with fighting dirty.

But time moves on and I grew up, and matured.

Another falsehood given to us as children that you learn is not true the hard way.

I broke my arm once, and it did not hurt as bad as some things I have had said to me. I don’t remember the pain from my broken arm, but I can still remember every pixel, sound, and smell of the moment when my mind registered those words that were spoken.

Of course, I am not that emotionally connected to ATS that anyone could do that much damage to my psyche, but words used here to deliberately offend or to deliver a virtual slap across the face, I do find off putting. It is easier for me to just leave the thread and remove it from myATS, than to reply.

Now you MUST See it for What is Was , A First Time Experience in your Life that was a Challenge to your Literal Being on this Earth and you Somehow Survived It in Memory . WE ALL Move On NOW..............

I think it has largely to do with how one approaches this site.

For me, it's news aggregation, discussion and debate. I am open to being wrong, not just told I'm wrong but proven wrong, although of course I don't like it as much as being right!

Being wrong, something that is dying out. Even the freedom to be wrong.....

I keep thinking that's probably my smartest move, but immediately tell myself, not yet. I wonder why I do that.

Probably for the same reason I do. There are nuggets of useful data in there. I can't let my feelings interfere with logic on such matters as the child abuse for one. Sticking to the message of the data and not the messenger is the best way IMO.

Yeah, you're right. I usually lose about 1k of points a month with my warnings, I wonder what they do with all those points.... I hope if the site adopts Pay to play, which I anticipate, we still get free cookies.
