ESC 2023 2nd Semi-Final is tonight in about 1 hour. For those who don't know, it's the World's Greatest music show. The Grand Final is on Saturday. I've heard that this show is not televised in the US. Here's an example from 2019. Australia's first ever entry to this annual song contest

I don't usually like country music(aside from Aussie country Slim Dusty etc) but this track is used on a rugby league promo and he sings good, i like it

I thought we(aust) were in it every year but couldn't figure out why, being euro and all. it's a messed up non musical free for all as i remember, just costumes and whatnot, but abba won it way back when with an actual song? from what i recall the best part is the commentators slagging off the scoring system?

Only one song from each participating country. Max 3 minutes, I believe, and there's probably a minimum as well- It has to be live. For a long time no samples were allowed, but that might have been changed at some point in recent years. Annually since the '50s. No country can vote for themselves. For many years it was jury only, but now mostly viewers votes. The reason Australia was eventually invited is their special connection to Europe. They've always been a great fan of the show, televised it every year and their desire to participate has been obvious for a long time. That's why they're in it now, despite not being European.
