The question I have is : WHAT are they shoplifting?

If it's food, that's one thing, if it's frivolous consumer/status items, that's quite another.

Food shortages could be remedied easier than someone stealing something like an Xbox.

What exactly makes up the majority of the losses these companies are reporting?

food, at least while i was working there was not a huge theft problem. in fact the one item one year that had the biggest number of units stolen in the store, was a 97 cent key chain knife, which we expect were stolen to use to open other packages to steal.

but here are what was normally the high theft departments, loosing the most money to theft. health and beauty (makeup, hair care, etc), was always one of the worst hit departments (interesting since many of it's stolen products, are some of the cheapest in the store), especially stolen items were makeup and racial hair care products. electronics of course was also always a high theft department in the say top 4 or 5. automotive was also always high theft, especially things like car accessories and beauty type things. and even power generators, i remember the night [I]FIVE power generators walked out of the store one after the other. and they are not small, in fact it normally takes two people to carry one. i swear the only reason things like radios were not high shoplifted, is because they were locked in a cabinet, right by the service writer /cash desk. and of course ladies clothing was also always huge for theft. and one year their biggest theft item was "toe socks", worth under $2 a pair.

i don't think the grocery section, accounting for somewhere between 1/4 and 1/3 of the sales floor space, was ever even in the top ten for loss in the store. and since i was the one they tended to send around to help out stores (actually helped open a lot, and worked at pretty much every store in the district that had a shop). and that seemed to be pretty standard across the board for department's theft rates compared to other departments in the stores.

now mind you things may have changed a bit over the last 11 years or so, since i was laid off (when Walmart leased all the auto-shops in our district to Mr lube). but while i suspect food thefts have gone up over the last couple years, i still doubt that food theft has gotten to be that high a theft problem compared to other departments.

Stores will have to look like what they are in the Philippines or in the USA ghettos soon. Everything behind bullet proof windows. Can't blame the store owners. I use to manage a 7-11 in Santa Monica and I can tell you this... there is NO Shame in stealing. Mostly at the time is was cold medicine, beer and whine. Run in, run out , jump in the car and sayonara .

Something in your words reminds me of the night of the day Clinton was made POTUS.
I lived across the street from a White Hen. That night, there was a small stream of
Americans, locals, who went in and just started taking stuff. I think it had something
to do with race, because for some reason all the racist stuff the DNC protected
(KKK, Segregation & Slavery, Byrd etc.)
has been gaslighted by media, education and other groups hostile to justice and fair play,
as becoming somehow Republican values. And now, it was their turn.

I recall this vividly because there never was any indication of robbery or brazen theft
at this location prior to the Clinton watermark in history.

Other things I didn't mention from the same night...
the night Bill Clinton was counted as election day victor.

This White Hen has no parking lot, it was all foot traffic.
After samples were taken outside, there was a tarrying.
The persons who abrogated paying, instead of leaving the area
they stood in small cliques on the sidewalk, as though wondering...
should I go back for more? Or, to be fair, perhaps cogitating
along other lines, ie., oh, we're back, because we forgot to pay....

One of the things I saw near the end of my stint there
were those big open racks for cigarettes, at the Jewel,
being raided by a crew, packs flying about like frisbees over my head.
Can you believe it. They actually had nicotine right out in the open.
In some of the cafes, the beans were also kept unsecured,
on a rack in the back of one of the smoking dens.
I watched a junkie potter fill his backpack more than once.
One cold night the junkie invited me to stay at his place. I had just fallen asleep,
and when I awoke, it was because my keys were walking away,
he had a wax press set up, in his hands.
I soon left this circle, and eventually wandered into tool and die.

Well the town has reparations now, for persons of color,
and a big street pavement mural
which is not inspired by Tyre Nichols, nor ever will be.

The police chief was replaced, and eventually he repositioned himself,
coincidentally, in my hometown, as had I.
It took him a while, but he finally got another close up and militant peek
at muh

People corrupt the system, yes, that we agree on. The system also corrupts people. It's a self perpetuating never ending cycle.

I'm not attacking you. I have no intention of attacking you. I'm conversing. If anything, maybe you're the one whose been attacking me with your assumptions that I'm a thief, a useful idiot and a communist.

It comes down to either integrity or self-righteous greed.
Personally I couldn't deal with myself doing something I can see harms others around me who don't deserve it.
I am just not materialistic and greedy enough.

Don't care if the place is corrupt or whatever, I have the ability to think well ahead and see that stealing anything will lead to a degradation of civil, peaceful lifestyle for everyone.

Only a greedy person who wants free stuff and who is incapable of seeing the bigger picture is capable of theft and be ok with it.

Kind of a very lowly mindset. Want now, me take.

Sorry, I can't lower myself to such basic functioning.
I hold my own self to a much higher standard and won't betray myself. It would disgust me to be such simple creature.

Others of course will find any excuse to trick their own selves to feel ok with theft because they want free shiny stuff. Even if it leads to their own environment becoming a chithole.

It boggles me.

Stealing doesn't fight corruption or teaches the company a lesson. That's the lie they tell themselves to accept their instant gratification urge.

The only thing that teaches a lesson would be to withold their money and give it to a different shop.
And if others don't follow their protest it is their right too.
A thieving git won't change personal opinions.

Fortunately evolution even works with corruption. If it becomes too much, more people will go somewhere else, because everyone has a line they don't let others overstep.

We don't need the imaginary help, (or ruin of decency more like) from greedy freeloaders.

It's because of them we can't have good things.

On that note,

Has anyone here not seen Hardcore Pawn? Outtakes should be available on Youtube.

People like to say "oh, do you believe in reality shows?" But the people on this one seem awful sincere.

Itā€™s just an intentional step to drive away the free market by encouraging crime. Government can then step in and issue some form of social credit system that the people can exchange for food at government distribution centers. The people will cheer for this as to not starve.

The die was cast when they went after the Mennonites and the Amish, and we did not fight for them.

When they terrorize folk with backyard chickens and gardens, and we say nothing. If they can fight to the teeth for the right of a man to claim to be a woman, and make it a criminal act not to treat that person in full measure as a woman, were is that fight when it comes to your life, well being, your health, and your rights to be able to sustain yourself on this planet?

Something is seriously wrong. We cannot remain this obtuse. Time is short and the water in the pot is boiling.

My point is that the system simply is, much like a gun simply is. It has no more power to do anything to anyone than the people who act within it.

To say the system corrupts is to give it a power it does not have and make every single person in it a passive victim.

If you acknowledge that we are the problem because consistently do not and cannot do right by others, then you cannot absolve the people in the system of the blame by blaming the system, not the people.

There will NEVER be a system that can survive humanity and our corruption. We cannot be perfect and likewise cannot build perfect systems. To blame the systems for our flaws is a refusal to accept responsibility.

The human nervous system functions by alternating between two general states of being --- relaxed or stressed (fight or flight). Both states work in health and harmony when they are properly balanced. Problems arise when one spends too much time in fight or flight mode and not enough time in relaxed. The person gets trapped in a perpetual feedback loop of chronic stress. Person thinks a stressful thought. Stressful thought is attached to a negative emotion. Negative emotion releases stress chemicals into the body. The Chemicals affect the way one feels. Chemicals trigger mood, mood triggers thought, thought triggers chemicals....a pattern is created. A perpetual feedback loop of chronic stress, pain, frustration, fear. This loop affects behavior, beliefs, perception.

It's bad enough when one or a few people get caught in this cycle, when you have a planet full of people caught in fight or flight mode... trapped in the system of fear...that's when things get real rough. That's when you create hell.

People would rather shoplift then pay for goods.
Walmart should get off the toilet and tell it like it really is.

I live in a ā€œFood Desertā€. There are two small convenience stores near me. Both proudly take Food Stamps and WIC. We have a gas station that does the same about a mile down the road. If you want to go to a store, an actual grocery store, you have to go 2 or three miles from here. If you go to those stores, what you find is a bunch of over priced food, and a lot of theft. If you go to a more affluent part of town, guess what? Lower gas prices, lower food prices, lower prices on just about everything and the reason for that, is that the stores donā€™t have to worry about being stolen from so badly that they canā€™t keep their prices down.

We have a profound problem in this country with the way certain people are being raised and their over developed sense of entitlement is what drives the majority of these kinds of crimes. People just steal what they want without consequence. The Target corporation got a serious wake up after George Floyd. Now they and Walmart donā€™t even bother prosecuting TV theft. It costs them more money to take someone to jail than it does to replace the TV. a reply to: JAGStorm

In my neck of the woods, the malcontents ride the bus down a major artery and bring their crime with them. Fortunately, the bus doesn't come as far as my home, so the crime comes to something of an end at the end of the bus line.

A fellow worker lives in Portland OR and he told me all the restaurants around him are closed. No more coffee shops or even fast food that you don't need to drive to. He moved there because he likes the able to have everything within walking distance and now he most likely drives more than me who lives outside of the city with zero issues.

Businesses do not close to give a big FU to the locals; they close because they lose their insurance. A friend works for Nike, and they are shutting down all their stores in Portland too. Most big box stores are gone and the homeless then move to camp in front of these closed businesses in a vicious cycle.
