That’s funny! I looked into that possibility when looking at sifters as well….but at a cursory look…all I saw was the mesh screen box frame versions. The scoop sifter is interesting. Although he doesn’t mention it in the list of stuff he took….

I was also thinking he took a grill plate with him for a small campfire, got tipsy on booze (his own flask), lost his balance at some point and fell backward onto the hot grill….

The rest is history….

Before this threads vanishes into the bowels of ATS.

I'll just add one more observation.

In Michalak's statement he gave to the RCMP he clearly states he has his map and a compass with him. Which he uses to tracks the craft and the direction they come from

So why was he unable to locate this site for the police and RCAF?

I previously mentioned similarly here…..

…..but you’ve added the map and RCAF …I failed to mention.

Either way it is what it is…..

R.I.P. Stephan Michalak

Yes I think there are elements to the case that will always remain a mystery.

Maybe Michalak was somewhere he wasn't supposed to be and didn't want to admit that (I believe you needed to stake a claim to be digging and I assume register it somewhere).

Going by his name (can't find any detail) he may also have been an immigrant and maybe his status wasn't clear cut hence his aversion to the police.

Pure speculation obviously.

Who knows what he was up to? Those burns are still a mystery too.

He was a Polish immigrant. He'd fought as a partisan in WWII and had also been a military policeman for a time. But immigrated to Canada after the war. I don't think there was any question about his status as he had a wife and children too. But reading between the lines of how he dealt with the officials investigating the case he seemed to have an aversion to authority figures.

Like I said, some elements of this story will remain a mystery.

The recent Russian missile strike in Poland and what Hynek referred to as “a plasma of the ball-lightning class.” probably makes this old school stuff. Tolerances of 4.5 microns (at altitude) and some classified adaptive optics.
You know the routine, Solome wants to know how the compact disc player works.
