Senate Votes to Reduce U.S. Dues to U.N.

The Senate voted Wednesday to reduce the United States' share of the cost of U.N. peacekeeping missions by tens of millions of dollars.


The vote reflected congressional criticism of the United Nations following allegations of corruption and mismanagement in the oil-for-food program for Iraq, sexual abuses by peacekeepers and other scandals.


U.S. dues are now capped at 27.1 percent of the peacekeeping budget. Under a 1994 law, that cap is to be reduced to 25 percent.

This isn't good enough. The US provides 25% of the UN peace keeping budget, how about 0%!!!!!!

How about finishing what you guys started?
You guys helped build the thing, and you guys have a duty to maintain it.....or does the US not have the bottle to try and help the world with the UN.....
Jeez just because the UN doenst sit with you on one war then oh thier the enemy blah blah blah....
I tell you I feel ashamed to be allied next to people who would mock the UN so easily yet claim thier good acts as "inconsequential" ......the UN's member states have done things wrong, same with plenty other countries.....the UN is not a seperate orginisation....but thats not what the people who make anti-UN statements want you to think....they try and make the UN to be the enemy and an evol orginisation...the help from the very top in washington just adds fuel to thier fire....sad...

More distortion but nope it won't work. There are good men fallen to the leadership of tyrants like Koffi. A Den of theives dosn't mean the entire manpower is corrupt and you know it. Why put good men under the command of tyrants.............

pull the plug on a bad situation and to stop wasteing our tax

Hi;

How can the people of the USA support such wastefullness and coruption. I have always felt that we should not support the UN as it has been going down the wrong path. Since its inception , we as Americans have spent money on an enity that has no longer helps , but rapes and pillages other countries. The coruption started when money became a factor for there exsistance. At Halloween we have seen the unicef donation cartons , come on I mean , look , stop giving. What has the UN done to help other countries except take there land , money , and told them to live this way or no support. We as people of the world should just stop giving to a enity that wants and wants. I am sure everyone would love to have something in place that has everyones interest in mind. But that is not going to happen , since we as people are all different from one another. Its better to stop giving to support the worlds habit , and start looking for something that everyone would agree on. How can Koffi Annan, a man with almost no actual power whatsoever, qualify as a "tyrant?"

How is wrongdoing by a few UN troops reason to scrap the whole organization?

Using the same "logic", you could argue the entire US military ought to be disbanded because of the behavior of a few "bad apples" in Abu Ghraib.

any indepth investigations, mostly because the UN, and Koffi
himself, have been dragging their feet and hiding documents.
So no, there has not been any complete investigations done.

I hope this is just the first phase of getting rid of the UN. Kofi should be thrown in jail, the rest kicked out of the country and the land reclaimed for some nice apartments. The UN is an embarrassing shameful organization and the sooner it is dismantled, the better.
